Adam Savage’s Maker Tour: Making a Wooden Bowl
For his last Maker Tour video, Adam breaks out his wood lathe and finishes the bowl he began during his Lower 48 visit. And with that, he completes his series of maker-space visits, at least for now! (This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation and Chevron.)

Hey Adam, woodworker here. Don’t forget to put a food/liquid friendly varnish on there to seal and protect the wood from any future damage. Good ones that I like to use are linseed oil or walnut oil.
Here is a good resource on wood finishing that is food-safe. http://www.finewoodworking.com/2006/08/01/food-safe-finishes
That came out beautiful
It’s all great but 4:47-4:48 = my favourite bit 😀
Adam I have 4 very important syllables for you.
Res – pi – rat – or
When working wood that fine you should know better to protect you lungs and if not for you for those watching you should know not to be breathing in that dust.
Walnut is especially toxic to be standing there breathing in all day, and that is completely inadequate face protection for turning, but I still want one of those shields for grinding grout. Who sells them?
Now why is the comments page making Chrome consume 600% of my CPU?
If you run that lathe very much, (and you should!) you need a dust collector, nothing covers a shop in dust like a wood lathe! LOL They are awful about that!
I haven’t tried it, but have heard that you can get a great finish by running a block of beeswax against it while it is on the lathe.
You should also get a proper sharpening set up for the lathe tools, I hand shapen with a wet stone. using that disk sander made me want to scream! LOL My dad once used a bench grinder, those tools were never the same. 🙁
Great video though, loved the filming and editing work!
So gorgeous.
Any chance of some pics of the custom stand? I have a similar lathe but it’s tucked away on a shelf and a moving stand would make it far more accessible. TIA
