i strongly second the recommendation for typeset in the future – it’s as lovely and riveting as his blog post detail dives, but i am getting the sense that he also takes more space to draw conclusions about the conventions of ‘the future look’ in general. how it’s often technological details that makes us think a typeface looks futuristic – be it in a technology-led design like machine-readable type, reproduction artefacts like LCD type, pixels, scanlines (usually all of them obsolete and as non-futuristic as it gets), or invisible typesetting detail made visible like letter shapes designed to make a legible imprint on paper at small size, scaled up.
adding to the independent artists’ books list:
highlights of my year were claire wendling’s rainbook (from stuart ng books) and meredith mcclaren’s bad ass bitches. from 2017, but also worth mentioning is kevin crossley-holland’s norse myths with illustrations by jeffrey alan love. it came out pretty much at the same time as gaiman’s norse mythology, so might not have gotten the stage it deserves for its magnificent imagery alone.
another long-awaited book is hans bacher’s vision – color and composition for film. bacher is an animation production designer extraordinaire, and a really good teacher of the fundamentals of imagery.
Just bought Typeset in the Future right after finishing the video.
And yeah, Stälenhag’s stuff is amazing. It’s a must have.
Thanks for the video !
Simon Stålenhag’s work is awesome.
