I’m going to refer back to this video when I think of something to make!
Epic! Lets start making! I’ve got an Arduino animatronic hand lined up for this summer!
I think they should just keep calling it “The As Yet Untitled Adam Savage Project” forever. 😀
Great conversation on iteration in the design process in this vid. Reminds me a lot of art school and dealing with first and second year students. A lot of them have difficulty being comfortable doing ‘bad’ preliminary drawings because they don’t like to see something ugly on the paper in front of them. They want it perfect and correct and exactly how it should be right from the first try. Breaking this tendency is a critical step in learning how to draw well. Nobody but nobody sits down in front of a canvas with a paint brush and proceeds to do a renaissance style painting in one go. That’s not how it works.
Talk Savagely.
I find it interesting how analogous the idea of motion in getting started in making is to software engineering.
As many probably know I don’t like the persona that Adam and Jamie have on Mythbusters, but THIS is the content I love. I could listen to Adam for hours about this stuff, he’s an amazing maker and artist. The more of this the better, I’m very interested in what Adam has to say and what he does for a living.
+1 for everyone who mentions the importance of process and quick and dirty exploration in order to better “know” the object you are making.
There is an interview with Jamie and Adam from the commonwealth club (which can be found on Youtube) in which the interviewers asks the guys what they have learnt from each other. Adam answers that Jamie has taught him not to throw out “the stupid solution”, saying something like “Honestly, there are times when I am going ‘we could machine an arm to do that’ and Jamie is like ‘Well, I got some chewing gum and I figured it out'”.
Adam is saying that the laughably simple solutions often end up being the best and, as any designer knows, those “lets build it from chewing gum and cardboard”-solutions (sketches, roughs, prototypes etc.) are also 100% vital even if the end product requires (or desires) a specific finish, material or process.
Given that Jamie seems to have a love for simple, brute-force approaches, but at the same time also designed some very elegant and clever robotics over the years, I’d love to see a video where he gives some insight into his design process as well.
These are fantastic, keep them coming guys. =)

These and the weekly podcast with Gary are really my favorite Tested pieces. I wish they would lengthen them a bit and maybe include some making specific questions from the tested audience as Adam is a pretty awesome resource to have at Tested.
These talks have inspired me to build an arduino based temperature controller and a DYI chiller box from mini fridge parts for a fermentation chamber (I have recently taken to the hobby of beer making). I have always had and interest in making but this has been a pretty great resource for inspiration. I have little to no real knowledge in any facet of this project but, everyone has to take their first step.
Call the show, “Working Title” or “Work In Progress”, or “Codename”. A name that sounds unfinished and flexible, like the state of something being created.
As someone who would like to get back into doing some circuit stuff, I have that no goal problem. My high school had a magnet program, so I’m still comfortable with all the logic gates as well as DACs/ADCs and can probably relearn stuff a little higher up than that. I won’t get to any electrical classes in college for another year or two, but… I just don’t know what to do. :/
Savage Discussions?
In any case I love these videos so far. These, along with your other talks, are slowly breaking me out of my self-made prison of “well I can’t do this because…”.
This, “Try this at home” is the best suggestion I’ve seen so far =)
480p on youtube? Uggh… Doesn’t seem too difficult these days to bump that up a little bit.
This content is such a breath of fresh air! keep up the great work guys!
I am just getting into 3d printing and I feel the same. Buy the best u can afford, and just do it. I didn’t want to spend $2500 on a UM2 so spent $1500 on a creator pro which was well reviewed and can justify buying a bunch of filament to just dive in. Thanks for the inspiration!
