Meet Phil Tippett and his Mad God

Norm takes you behind the scenes of special effects pioneer Phil Tippett’s Mad God project. Phil, who worked on Star Wars, Robocop, and Starship Troopers, has been making the stop motion shot film for over 20 years. Mad God is his masterpiece, and this is a rare look at the models and props that Phil has collected over the years for the project.

  1. Is it just me or does he seem like an older beared Philip Seymour Hoffman?

Yes! I kept thinking this the whole way through.

  2. He should totally license this out to be a game at some point, maybe when he is done with the first chapter, and with the way it can “easily” branch off into separate narratives, for instance if he has a grandiose idea that can’t be don’t due to funding or time some game studio could do that for him.

  3. Seems like a very personal project. I’d love to see the finished project in all its glory. Of course, it helps that it all looks fucking crazy.

  4. Fascinating. Keep up with the long videos guys. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a 15 minute + vid up on the site. 🙂

So question for Norm- in the process of shooting this, did you ever get the chills thinking this guy is totally batshit and you need to run away really fast? Or no?

  5. This reminds me a little bit of The Flaming Lips’ Christmas on Mars, the whole do it yourself in spare time attitude, that it’s not about everything being perfect, but building things with so much love and dedication that it shows on screen. And to do so much with stop motion takes real dedication. I am totally into this.

  6. I apologise for doubting the Tested boys. The content you guys are pumping out now rocks my socks off.

  7. This was awesome, really cool to see behind the scenes for Phil’s personal project. I will definitely make sure i see this when it come out, I find alternative films pretty interesting.
