Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Hacking a Flashlight for Adam’s EDC

Not too long ago, Adam showed off the contents to his everyday carry, which included his go-to LED pocket flashlight. That flashlight was lost, so Adam needs to replace it with another that has a proud button. That means modifying a flashlight with a recessed button. To the lathe!

  1. Haha, fantastic video. Mistakes and scares are part being a maker. 🙂

EDIT: Also very nice to see the word ‘hacking’ used correctly.

  2. Reaching in and below the lathe like that to retrieve those button pieces looked really dangerous.

  3. Yes, I love these types of videos! 🙂

    .

I am also glad they left that “Oh, Sh*t!” moment in there, and didn’t edit it out..

  4. All he would have to do is slightly unscrew either the head or tailcap to prevent that from happening..

  5. Part of me wants thinks Adam should clean under his nails if he’s doing lots of close ups of his hands on camera. And part of me thinks Adam should never clean under his nails, because fuck it.

  6. Enjoyed the video. I love the podcasts and the longer form videos with you guys, Adam, & Jaime!

Joey…when the error (i.e., the “oh sh*t” moment) occurs…fading to black & white video and Including the “28 Days Later” theme was absolutely brilliant! The humor and drama were not lost one me. Thankfully, Adam was able to bring the flashlight back…

  7. Where does Adam buy his flashlight from? The Jetlight company website does not list it. Is it discontinued?

  8. Sure you could, but isn’t that a bit inconvenient? I’d rather have a shrouded button, being able just to turn it on and off and knowing that it hasn’t been on all day, instead of having to twist it every time I use it.

Everybody have different preferences I suppose.

  9. Yeah, some people might find it inconvenient, but that is what Adam wants in a flashlight..

For me, it doesn’t really matter whether or not the button is shrouded or standing proud of the tailcap. I tend to use the pocket clips on my lights to hang them off the pockets in my pants. So I find that I rarely, if ever, accidentally activate the light in my pocket.

But like you said, everyone has their own way of doing things..

  10. Also depends on how much resistance the button has. If the button has sufficient resistance, it won’t accidentally turn on in your pocket even if its proud.

  11. I am very surprised that Adam only had one replacement flashlight. If I lost one–and really loved this model–I would buy five and fix them all at once. I would have not had a problem with reassembly because I would do the first few serially and could have disassembled another flashlight to get the order of assembly. Of course, having four spares would insure I never lost another so the effort was wasted 😉
