How To Walk Like an Ape (for Performance Capture)

For the new movie Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, motion-performance actors went through some schooling to teach them to walk like quadrupeds. We chatted with Apes’ movement choreographer Terry Notary about how to act and move like an ape, and take a hands-on lesson!

  1. Great video! I can’t believe how the choreographer get into so well! He’s super super talented.

Would have been great to make it a smidge longer!

  2. Agreed connerjason. It’s informatieve but slightly rushed.

It’s great to see Terry get into character so easily, and the nuances between different types of ape.

  3. I believe Terry was also the coach for Burton’s POTA. I own the DVD for the special features alone.

  4. That is a great display of range in just a couple minutes. It all looked very accurate too (based on what I’ve seen on Animal Planet).

It must take days of standing up straight to correct for the strain on their backs though.

  5. As an actor myself, allow me to give away one little secret.

Yes, making the monkey noises is 100% necessary

    And FUN! ,-)

    Great video, Tested!!

  6. Fascinating stuff. I’d love to see more from this guy. I’ll look out for him in making-of videos.

  7. super cool video! I’d love to see you guys cover more motion capture for movies or video games, just to see little tips and tricks these guys have

  8. I majored in anthropology, so I spent a good amount of time studying apes and other primates. He really nails the mannerisms and mindset of the apes he imitates. I wish there had been more time to discuss his background and how he came into this position. Also, I want a set of those hand-stilts.
