Shop Tips: Know Your Hot Glue Guns

Every time Frank comes up to San Francisco to work on a project, he criticizes our hot glue guns. So we had to visit his shop to learn about Frank’s favorite hot glue guns. For this week’s Shop Tip, Frank explains the difference between high and low temperature hot glue, and how he uses each.

  1. Do you find its worth having a 1/2′ and a 5/8″ glue gun – do to the different glue types ( specialty wood – plastic – ceramic types ) only being available in one or the other sizes – Or do you stick with one size – the one that does your go to glue type, since that is the majority of your gluing? Are the so called special glue types really necessary for other materials?

  2. Adam had mentioned in a previous vid that you were going to educate him on the updates in gluing and hot glue technologies in use today, I would love to see the use of different glues and situations they are advantageous in.

  3. i feel like this was merely letting people know there were two different types of glue guns. I was sorta hoping you’d go more into depth about them and when to use one but not the other or something

  4. neat starter on something that sounds likely to get overlooked a lot. i know it does in our workshop – my father bought a hot glue gun back when they were the hot new thing, and while it was generally agreed upon that the quick setting time was super neat for a number of things, it never fully caught on with us because the thing was drippy and took a while to heat up, and the glue didn’t hold too well. i’m not considering it unlikely that there has been a case of glue/gun mismatch going on, plus early tech vs late tech.

now the big question is whether it’s likely to get the hot glue gun out from the hobby craft niche it ended up in. my mother’s too no-frills and get-shit-done to start investing in something to which there already is a solution. father doesn’t do much woodworkig anymore. and i just went in the opposite direction (actual hide glue) for the few glue joints i can’t find a way around.

  5. I scored an almost new TC gun from eBay for $85!!! I’m looking for a good general purpose glue from McMaster. Suggestions?

  6. seems like these tools remove the “point, shoot, wait, no glue, wait, too much glue” loop the cheaper hobby shop glue guns seem to have? The glue distribution at the end of the video was way more linear and precise than what I get, and there was no annoying string of glue from application point to gun at the end of an application?

  7. I found myself in need of a glue gun and did not want a cheap art store one that might fail in the middle of the project. I recalled this video, goodness, it was a year ago. So Frank, one year later, thanks for the information.

Norm, on your list of things to do (that may not get done or may justify the need of an intern), please add “search tags for instructional videos”. I did a search for this video but I think that I was found because “glue gun” was in the title and narrative. Tested’s videos are filled with some amazing tibits of information.
