Adam Savage and Simone Giertz Make a Popcorn Machine

This very special One Day Build is an international collaboration with the newest member of the Tested family! Simone Giertz is an amazing maker who builds mesmerizing robots. To build her latest machine, she chats with Adam from her home in Sweden to design a mechanism to deploy popcorn from a helmet. Adam builds some parts in the cave using his trusty vacuum-form machine!

  1. Adam,

You’re building a rocket back pack (forgot the right term at this moment)

Please make a video from that one as well 🙂

Btw: very cool video, but would have loved to see some more technical info on the build.

ps: Welcome to the family 🙂

  2. Come on Adam , I know your keeping cosplay builds under wraps but give us something like the cosmonaut , captains chair or maze builds , I miss the long builds PLEASE

  3. Very entertaining, i love Simone colaboration. as always it feel refreshing to see that tested isn’t just a big boy playground!

keep on testin guys, i know i’ll keep on watchin!

  4. I am so excited that Simone is part of Tested, I cannot tell you. This video had me laughing the entire time.

  5. I. Love. This.

Simone always gets me laughing, and her interplay with Adam can only be gold. She has such a practical whimsy about the things that she does, and I love that Adam at first is a bit… skeptical about the plausibility of the project due to the whimsy, but buys in totally by the end of their Skype convo due to the practicality.

Nice job, Joey, Adam, Simone, et. al.

  6. nothing so fun as building something just for the fun of building it.

i’m waiting for a collaboration with Colin Furze.

name any project the safety team from mythbusters band, and he will be up to it.

  7. This is ridiculous… just like all the best builds. I think I’d have used more servos and microswitches/potentiomenters to control trapdoor movement, arm and wrist rotation independently, that said the elegance of just using a simple mechanical connection is beautiful in its own way.

  8. Welcome Simone! I think the hats amazing, and I’m glad to see tested growing more. As for the trap door popcorn release, is there a way to use a screw mechanism in the same way a gumball machine does? It might cut up some of the popcorn, but would slow down and hopefully measure the amazing dispensed.

  9. Utterly joyful. Sometimes the best reason to “create” is just to be silly. How can I help but share this with everyone I know?

  10. What is the extruded, looking metal “c” channel, she placed the servos in? Perhaps a proper name?

  11. This is great! A female and a swede o/

Looking forward to more funny machines!

Alså, it seems like many swedes are into tested

  12. This was entertaining so say at least. 🙂 you should probably get a dog to eat of the floor when you will have a popcorn.. 😀 good job guys. 🙂

  13. This was a hilarious build. Seems like with some longer pauses at the front and back, and a little more twist, it would be basically what she wanted…

  14. Great Work. Welcome to tested. Äntligen lite mer balans i könsfördelningen. Great to se your work Simone.

  15. I love solving problems on the fly and Adam had the perfect working things out in his mind look at the start. I look forward to more crazy projects from Simone in he future.

  16. Welcome Simone! I remember being introduced to your cereal robot video recently, which I think is totally in keeping with what Tested is trying to achieve here.

I enjoyed this video tremendously. Silly, short builds (duck bomb!) are always a great thing to watch. And I’m sure that Adam’s increased amounts of free time now mean that the more in depth builds, whether they be prop related, technical skills based, or otherwise, will also be forthcoming. Fun times on Tested!

  17. Simone and Adam, my two favourite inventors! I was subscribed to each individually, but this is a dream team. So happy Simone has joined the tested team I laugh so much I cry at everyone of her vids.

  18. So I know this is all fun and games, but you guys should perhaps contact a handicap/paraplegic society with the plans. With some tweeking the design and de-clowning, make it react sensitively to facial commands, you could make a device that could actually help someone.

  19. Holy CRAP I love Simone Giertz so much. I hope she moves to the US and becomes a regular on all of the vids.

  20. Great stuff! More silly builds with Simone please! Ta nu och ak med baten till Kalifornien, sa ni slipper gora samarbeten over skype!

  21. Oh hey, I didn’t realize Simone is going to be a fixture on future Tested stuff. That’s great. Welcome!

  22. I had fun before watching the one day builds. This made me smile for the whole video. Great stuff, absolutely hilarious.

    Like!

  23. Lots of fun. I award this five scoops of popcorn! Bonus points for the introduction of the homemade vacuum forming machine.

I wonder if an arduino programmed pause at the moment of popcorn delivery would have increased the amount of successfully delivered popcorn.

  24. This may seem like a pointless build, but if it were working, lightweight, and simple to maintain, we could use it.

In our afterschool program, the kids love to eat popcorn while they work. But it gets quite messy, and their hands are often busy soldering, gluing, etc, so they keep going back and forth to wash hands, eat, work, wash, eat, work… A functioning device like this could make our lives easier.

  25. Welcome Simone! This was a tremendously entertaining build! At first I was dubious about how it was going to come together but by the end I was intrigued and laughing my ass off. Well done! Definitely looking forward to the next one!

  26. Funny how the vacuum former kinda looks like a popcorn machine and you could probably rig it for that purpose if you wanted to make a mess. Great collaboration! Looking forward to more

  27. Simone posted a video about this build on her channel too 🙂

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Iwdl3eQVsY

Welcome to Tested, Simone. Judging by this video and what I’ve seen on your channel so far, I have a feeling you should fit right in with these lunatics.

Also, a scandinavian on Tested is pretty cool, even if its a Swede… best regards, a Norwegian. 🙂

  28. welcome simone! what a wonderful addition to the team, and what an amazing brand of zaniness. 😀

  29. It’s 02:30 here and I’ve just woke the missus up because of my laughing. If she’s grumpy in the morning I’m blaming you guys.

It will have been worth it anyway… Got to have a good laugh.

  30. Welcome Simone! So happy to see Tested growing. Just became a premium member to support the family. Keep making awesome builds!

  31. I’ll admit I didn’t know Simone before today, but after watching her intro the popcorn helmet, I’m already happy she’s on the team. Seems like the excitement continues here at Tested. Welcome aboard Simone!

  32. I think you need to re evaluate the whole idea. I mean, eating popcorn should be the most simpler thing that a human can do. Based on that premise, I think that using a helmet is not intuitive or comfortable for many reasons (obstructs people behind me in a theather, a bad movement of my head will thrown the popcorns to the floor, and I can think in many other disadvantages), so I think it’s a better idea to have the popcorn bag or ball on your lap and from there use some sort of dispensor that brings the popcorn from below to your mouth (I think more on a kind of straw big enough to provide a road to popcorns to a front mouth dispensor or something similar). Jus my 2 cents. Happy hacking.

  33. I second the idea of a collaboration with Colin Furze! The combination of Adam and Colin has so much potential for great entertainment and the production of something amazing.

  34. Very entertaining video! Welcome to Tested Simone, always great to see someone new joining the Tested family.

  35. Excellent build and I love to observe their creative process from idea to finished prototype. Simone Giertz and Adam Savage make me laugh…bravo

  36. Superman So far you’ve made 14 lazy troll posts on Tested, and my reply to your second ever post is the only bite you’ve had. May want to try somewhere else, Biff. This cannot possibly be worth logging in every other month.

  37. Well, that was fun to watch! 🙂 I totally see it working with just a few minor tweaks, like getting the hands to come closer to the mouth, and in a slower pace. Adding a sensor of sort in the handscopes, perhaps a scale or a rod, something to detect if theres any popcorn left, and then program it to only switch hand when the first one is empty.. And instead of the trapdoors, use a revolving disc with a hole in it where the size of the hole gives a meassured amount of popcorn.. Then you also have the advantage of controlling not only the flow of popcorn, but you make sure to stir and loosen up sticky popcorn if flavoured,, 🙂 You could also downsize it alittle and using lighter materials ofcourse.. But I’ve seen wierder inventions sell into the millions, so a finished model might actually take off. 🙂 Oh, and now that Tested have gotten their claws on you Simone; nice seeing a girl amongst the nerds 🙂 You should create a robothead of yourself so we can see you on ThisIsOnlyATest 🙂

  38. This makes me so happy. Videos like this help to make it ok to fail at a project. It’s something new makers aren’t taught and get discouraged when things don’t work out the way they had envisioned. Make things, make them badly, iterate, then make them better. I hope you make a follow up of this project with some troubleshooting and end up with a working version.

  39. Fun, although if he weren’t getting ready to start his new tour, you could have done a third time zone and gotten Alton Brown involved, since it does involve a geeky food delivery mechanism.

  40. I am so happy to see Simone added to Tested. Her builds embody the pure joy of creating, and I think her sense of humor will be a good fit here. Looking through the pervious comments I am happy to see that so many people seem to feel the same. Welcome to Tested Simone.

  41. So happy i joined Tested a few months ago, I really feel like Simone is going to be a star on your team an the combination of her and Adam will create really great content!

  42. I just watched this with my daughter and she and I loved it. Welcome Simone, look forward to your creations. Well done 🙂

  43. Simone is a great addition to the Tested team and with Adam having more time to give this site is going from strength to strength. I can’t wait to see whats next.

  44. The BEST part of this build is at 12:11 No spoilers, just skip to 12:05ish and turn the volume up 🙂

    Pure gold.

  45. Hey Adam, you mentioned that you were using hot-rolled steel rod. I’ve worked with cold-rolled mild steel rod, and am not quite sure on the difference (yes I could research it) But you comment on how cheap it is reminded me of how easy it is to work with, and how much I used to build with it as a kid. Could you do a quick video on the general types of steel someone might want to look into for building small projects? I used small bending jigs to make all sorts of things out of 1/4in mild rod and I’m sure that someone with talent would actually be able to make useful things! I thought it might help someone who is trying to get an idea of what materials they can try out.

  46. Come on guys, I know a good April Fools prank when I see one…can you imagine wearing this at a real theater? “Excuse me, can you please remove your popcorn dispenser hat?” Loved the video and welcome to Simone.

  47. Ahhh! I love this! Thank you both for everything about this amazing project!

    Grattis Simone! Keep it up!
