How To Slush Cast a Prop Helmet

This week’s special project is all about casting! We’re in Frank’s shop to show you how to create a hollow resin cast of a helmet using slush casting. Here’s how slush casting compares to other methods, a demonstration of the full process, as well as tips for your own projects!

  1. Thanks for the tutorial.

You said you did about 6 coats, how thick was the end result (on average)? Are we talking 1/8″ thick or so?

  2. Always great info!
When you guys do these tutorials, what happens to the parts? I mean who wouldn’t want a nostalgic Rocketeer helmet?!

  3. Think they said they are going to use it in an upcoming video. Assuming for something like another paint tutorial.

  4. , it would be awesome if you opened up your shop for tours like once a month or once every six months. I would gladly pay for that. A class would be even more awesome.

  5. haha wishful thinking. Keep up the amazing work. Love all of the videos. Currently in the middle of Episode 4 of the Resin Kit Painting. You need to start giving Norm airbrush painting homework so he can get more comfortable with it (during all of his free time of course haha).

  6. I’m only a novice with casting and have a question about finishes.

For me and what I’ve seen in the past, if I want a matt finish I use matt spray paint, if I want a gloss finish I use Gloss spray paint. Which makes sense.

I wanted to know if I wanted a metallic finish on the prop would covering the master in metallic spray paint make any difference? Has anyone tried unique finishes on the master, and has it produced a unique result on the cast?

  7. So, how thick should the Casting be to dont break fast with Onyx?

And will Slush Casting work with Pigments ?
