Adam Savage Visits The Lion King’s Puppet Shop

Adam Savage and the team at Tested go backstage at The Lion King during its run in San Francisco! We visit the musical’s puppet shop, where puppet supervisor Michael Reilly walks us through the numerous intricate and varied puppets and masks used in the performance and shows us how they’re maintained in his traveling workshop!

  1. That was awesome! Though Michael didn’t seem to quite believe that you wanted to actually see his portable shop.

  2. I’m so glad that Adam asked about the shop space. I would have never believed that all those cabinets traveled with the production. I’m sure there are a lot of industries that require a portable shop space this sophisticated, but I’ve never seen one before.

  3. Man that is awesome, how many times did I see a workshop of a theater in my life? Never! So great that a site like this exists and gets access sometimes to that kind of stuff. Thanks!

  4. I saw this show about ten years ago in Australia, and it was gloriously beautiful. It’s probably the benchmark Disney stage production.

  5. That was awesome. I love seeing the behind the scenes and how things are made. I thought seeing the behind the scenes at our local university theater was cool, but this was even better! Thank you.

I must find a way to see the Lion King.

  6. I helped build the show back in ’97. The traveling productions really are a marvel of space management and creative tooling– that they managed to cram all the weird stuff we came up with into such a tiny space (and number of trucks) is engineering at its finest. The “puppet hospital” at the New Amsterdam was around four times that size, and still felt cramped.

  7. If Adam would like to see the studio where Zazu was born, I would be happy to give him a tour the next time he is in Portland, Or.

  8. So cool to see someone so excited to share their craft with someone equally enthralled by the process. Such incredible work that millions of people have appreciated over the years, but never really thought about what it takes to make it happen. Michael is incredible!
