Tested Builds: Japanese Papercraft, Part 1

The month non-stop of Tested Builds continues! This week, we embark on a whole new kind of project: an intricate Japanese papercraft scale model from a classic animated film. It’s an ambitious model kit that neither of us have attempted before, so join us for the fun! To watch, sign up for a Tested Premium Membership by clicking here.

  1. Hey awesome tested gods, the download link on this vid seems to be not there, it just 404’s at the moment, being in Australia its the best option for me so I’ll just hope someone sees this comment 😀

  2. I second that. Having a hard time streaming this one, even on my 90mbit connection for some weird reason, maybe the Tested server is under load? A working download link would be bomb, cheers.

  3. It’s the middle of the night in San Francisco, I’m sure the link will be fixed as soon as the guys wake up.

  4. I have been meaning to get to this one, I have built so many of these. Awesome!

Deciphering the Japanese is the worst part. Most of the time it’s easy but with a few I’ve had to get translations.

  5. I loved building models as a kid, this seems like a natural progression for adults that provides a challenge. Are there any kits recommended for newbies or is it best to jump in the deep end and start building something similar to the kit in the video?

  6. Not sure if I just haven’t been adjusting my HD setting on other (YouTube) videos, but something about this particular one looks fantastic. I can’t wait to see how you manage to pull this build off in a week without an over nighter.

  7. They also spoil the next thing that they are building in next week’s video series for all of you non-premium members.

And it’s definitely not Japanese papercraft. 😉

  8. Hey if you DO wind up using hot glue, I HIGHLY recommend that you use canned air, turned upside down, to quickly cool/cure the hot glue. When I make puppets and have to join two pieces of reticulated foam edge-to-edge, it is INVALUABLE for quickly cooling and setting hot glue, particularly larger puddles.

The only downside is that they have a bittering agent mixed in these days to prevent huffing, so you will want to wash your hands before eating to keep the bitter off of your hands and out of your mouth.

    You’re welcome, World.

  9. & , what was the new helping hands alternative you were mentioning? I’m tired of gator bites in my project components.

  10. Google translate does Japanese to English with camera input. I don’t speak Japanese though so I can’t say how good it is, but I would guess it’s serviceable.

  11. I recommend running spotify as background noise for these, till they find some backing music for it.

  12. I don’t know if changes later as I haven’t finished the video yet, but every time he glues on an outside seam, I cringe. Why not apply the glue to the interior corners where even the residue, as clear drying as it may be, won’t be visible?

  13. Im curious to how people display/store/keep these.

You do enough, it must take up some prime display space.

  14. Well, unfortunately, http://www.hlj.com papercrafts are nearly 99% out of stock.

Luckily, I have found a working Howl’s Moving Castle PDF link. That will keep me busy for months.

Anyways, this is so much fun. My wife thinks I’m nuts. Well, I am!
