Sooo… this is going to take a while, right? 🙂
FYI for the most part ESD doesn’t destroy anything it hinders it and shortens it’s life span. It micro-perforates sensitive boards. ESD is part of the reason for the Apple NVidia recall.
Capacitors definitely have orientation!!!
Some caps have orientation (polarity). The small little disk shaped ones, ceramic caps, do not have polarity. Electrolytic caps, the tall cylinder ones, do have polarity.
I wasn’t thinking clearly…was just picturing the cylinder style caps in my head when I commented. You are correct, both the ceramic discs and the little blob style (like what I think Will had there, the yellow one) as well as the block style are flippable.
Norms cold solder joints are cringe worthy, but everyone does that there first time.
I went to the hypnocube website and navigated to the kit instructions page, and it is broken. However, if you view page source, you can find a chunk of commented-out html where there are a bunch of links to instruction PDFs.
Depends on the type of capacitors and the usage 😉
Eh, it’s different my main thing is on computers, I used to work in an apple store and ESD is something they drill into you. The simpler the circuit/board the more damage can be done by a single ESD-event.
soldering to steel is very difficult I was very surprised they used it. The steel should have really been provided pre-tinned to make it easier to solder. But that would probably cost more to do…
why change tshirts between E1 & E2?
Because it’s the next day and one does not wear the same T-Shirt for two days in a row?
All of the Jackson/Tolkien movies can be watched in several sittings. Especially the extended editions. There’s no need to keep watching once you hit your fatigue point. Come back tomorrow when you’re fresh. However, it is annoying that blu-ray disks tend not to remember where I was up to the way DVDs do.
No 1080p download link yet?
is there an issue with your camera fade? noticed at end of vid 1 and start of this the ghostly images behind a veil of greyishness

Yeah, i think will has it right, esd can be catastrophic with certain technologies but the overwhelming majority of work can be carried out without it. it’s one of those things that no one is prepared to say ‘FFS don’t bother with those poxy wrist straps’ on the off chance they are wrong, without understanding everything about the technology at hand it’s hard to tell. I have been playingworking with electronics for 40 years and have killed many, many components, but not 1 with esd, and i rarely use a strap
