Tested Builds: Studio Scale Millennium Falcon, Part 5

Bonus episode! We actually had one more episode of our Millennium Falcon build last week, but didn’t get a chance to post it while we were at Comic-Con. So here it is! Let’s see how those greeblies get attached to the cockpit of this model. If you’re not a member and want to support us, please consider signing up for a Tested Premium Membership here! 1. I finally bit the bullet and ordered my subscription yesterday! I think I’m going to weather and assemble the interior stuff first and wait to accumulate more hull plates before repainting them.

If anyone is interested, here’s some good build videos I’ve been watching. Also ModelSpace/DeAgostini is putting out a painting video with Steve Dymszo, the model maker who worked on this. I’ve gotten the impression that they’re really scaling back on the prepainting. They won’t be able to get it consistent with manufacturing spread out over so long.

There’s some great Facebook groups too. Just search Millennium Falcon. There’s good threads in the official forums too.

Then, there are loads of 3d printed parts available on Shapeways. Some of them are total part replacements with more detail and even predrilled holes for fiber optics like in the cockpit console and computers in the interior. I plan on getting a few parts to fill up the cargo area like the barrels, chairs, R2-D2, C-3PO, etc.

Can’t wait to get started on this!

  2. yes! the steve dymszo tutorials are pretty great. repainting this will be essential, and a lot of fun.

  3. I knew I had to get it after seeing the prototype in person at Celebration. In fact, I saw it about two minutes before bumping into ! Seeing this and the stuff at EFX that Steve Neisen did put model building on my radar again. Steve was happy to hear I recognized him from Tested videos too.

For what it’s worth – I’ve heard that ModelSpace for USA subscribers is working on offering the option to buy back issues and catch your subscription up to whatever the most current one is and get a bunch in a lump. DeAgostini does this in the UK so you can by now and for example and get issues 1-30 (or whatever they’re up to). Though the US subscriptions are a bit further behind still. This is great if you want to get caught up and want to build faster than they’ll ship them out. I figured I might as well sub now, and if I want to get caught up quick the option might be there. At the very least I can accumulate parts.

  4. , great info! one of the bigger variables holding back my purchase is having to wait on new issues. Ill follow some of the links you posted and see if that sparks my motivation further. Its still a pretty spendy kit but totally worth the money, imo. Did you see that Shadow Trooper armor tho?? UGH! so much on the project wish for this fall/winter. Thanks for enabling, TESTED.

It would be pretty dope to road trip to San Diego for next years party. I’m working on convincing my buddies to go with me. I still need to do Google research on how to obtain tickets to the con.

  5. At 31:50 you can hear the sirens, Polices are coming in to stop the insanity LOL!

I can only imagine, Police charging their office and yelling, “EVERYONE! DROP THE MODEL”

  6. Can we get an HTML5 video player up in here? I’d rather not turn Flash back on just to watch Premium videos. I mean, I’ll do it if I have to, but…

  7. I like the “drink every time those parts fall out game”. Gonna need to buy more beer with Will’s track record, though. ;P

  8. Can we get an HTML5 video player up in here? I’d rather not turn Flash back on just to watch Premium videos. I mean, I’ll do it if I have to, but…

    I’ll second this.

    I’ll second this.

Yes, HTML5 player please. Flash needed to die years ago, its a zombie that just won’t go away.

Anyway, I glued those two handles in on mine already, as I was having the same issue with them falling out every time I shifted it. Though, before I glued them in, I did keep them in place with cellophane tape between months 1 & 2.

  10. Make sure you don’t glue the cockpit together, they are replacing the top in a later issue to be more screen accurate.

  11. So… At first I thought it would be a good idea to make a drinking game out of these videos too, but then I realized, I’m gonna have alcohol poisoning if I drink every time those little pieces fall out. just use a Ziplock and tape it to the most visual place on the wall!

Me too. time to turn off flash, only site i need it for is Tested sadly. Flash is outdated !!!

  13. Throw away Duracels and buy some real ones. Duracels tent to leak even within waranty period!! i use very cheaps no brands for years now and they don’t leak even when they are older then the Duracel one

  14. I’m still holding out… Barely…

I suspect my resolve will fail over the next few months. Especially if they produce the complete kit shipped in one enormous box.

  15. Norm, you need to take those hyperdrive actuators when Will isn’t looking and hide them in a safe place until it’s time to glue them in.

  16. I completely agree on this. What’s surprising to me is that premium content works on Android and iOS; it seems like it already has non-Flash support. It just won’t activate on desktop. And, it’s user-agent based. In Chrome, if you disable Flash, open developer tools, and switch the device to, e.g., iPad, an HTML5 player comes up.

  17. That is a great tip! Thank you. Hopefully this also means it’s no big deal to toggle the feature for desktop browsers.

  18. It’s frankly ridiculous that each issue has you assemble the cockpit and passageway, then take it apart again… With all the assembly and then disassembly, it wouldn’t surprise me if you chaps break some of the parts at some point in the future.

As you’re going to be doing a lot of painting to hide the ‘oh crap’ moments, there’s no point gluing any of it really until you’re at a point where you can do the entire cockpit at one and then leave it to one side until you’ve painted the hull and can assemble it all together.

Those 3d printed replacement and additional parts are gorgeous though.

  19. I just secure the parts that keep falling out with a bit of white elmers glue. It dries clear and when I’m ready to paint I just give the part a bit of a tug and out it comes. Otherwise it stays in place.

  20. I added it up and … I don’t think I want to swing $1500 for a Millennium Falcon model. Even though it looks very cool.

It only comes out to ~$15 a week, so you can justify it that way!

  22. Loving the series, and I’ve a GREAT TIP for you.

Those tiny plastic pieces ping out of your tweezers yeah? This is easily fixed by ‘shodding’ then tweezer tips. A technique used in surgery (I train surgeons). This involves getting some thin rubber/silicone tubing and slipping it over the tips on the tweezers – The lumen of the tube needs to be small enough to self retain on the tweezer prongs. This will give a grip/purchase when picking up those tiny pieces.

    Hope this helps.

  23. Another option would be to use electrical heat shrink. The benefit with this method is you can shrink to the shape of the tweezers.

  24. That was the funniest thing, watching those little parts fall out every few minutes. Norm your reaction was priceless each time!

    KEEP IT UP GUYS!

  25. just got my first subscription with 1,2,3 and 4 is there any way to expedite your orders instead of waiting a whole month ?

  26. Sooooooo just signed up to build this piece of awesomeness! Can’t wait to follow you guys and pick up some ideas along the way 🙂

  27. Loved the impression of Adam, “I had a few hours one day so I…” I think he starts every big reveal with that line. I swear he’s going to say, “I had a few days off of filming so I made the Hyperdrive functional”

at 29:00 look at the gap at the end of the cone, thats why the back of the cone wouldn’t fit.

  28. If anyone is interested, I made some figures for the DeAgo Falcon on Shapeways… got tired of waiting for someone else to do it!

  29. “1…2…5!” “3 Sir!” “3!!”

A great test of patience & persistance! Well done guys… (1 year later the new member said)
