video might work but I cannot see it.
me neither
No video here as well
…. if we had an arm extension, it might work.
opps, hit post twice, sure can use that arm extension.
You have a rouge unescaped single quote in your javascript in Simone’s last name:
document.addEventListener(“DOMContentLoaded”, function() {
OO.ready(function() {
window.pp = OO.Player.create(‘container’, ‘Simone Giertz‘s Arm Extensions–It Might Work!’, playerParam);
});
});
sorry bout that–try it now!
All clear, Norm. Video loads fine.
I’m sorry, I have been trying to give Simone a chance, but everything she makes comes off as a 12 year old’s terrible science project. That might be amusing to some, but it’s not why I signed up for Tested. What a waste of time.
/in before everyone calls me sexist.
this reminds me of something i built as a wee lad, out of some construction toy set!
y’all know pantographs, right? i built one that was strapped to my upper arm, and transposed my elbow movement onto a huge-ass arm. i remember the first version only having a few tyres on its hand, so all i could do with it was whack things with much longer arms than mine. i soon improved upon it by giving it a small grasping hand, powered by twine running to my hand.
i remember being surprised how well and intuitive this worked. AND IT’S PRACTICALLY MECHA ARMS!
You’re not alone
Please remove Simone from tested Her stuff never works and she is too silly.
I know some 12 yrs old who can seriously rock science projects, even their terrible ones are impressive.
It is called learning, dude, everyone is learning. All of the time, non-stop.
Curious, when Frank and Bill built the Alien Power Loader for Ripley, did you post how lame it was because it was not motorized, you know, not like the movie?
IMHO, you sound like a person who needs to just chill.
thanks for your support, and sorry this isn’t your cup of tea. we love simone and her projects–her voice is important and inspirational to our maker community. we’re also producing a few other new premium series as well featuring other members of the tested family, so hopefully you’ll enjoy those.
I find Simone hilarious. Even before she was on Tested I would occasionally watch her videos. Love seeing her here. 🙂
This actually did work but needs fast acting servos and linear actuators…….as well as neural sensors on the lower arm muscles for control. This could be further develop quite nicely.
To be honest I don´t see the issue here. Let´s compare it to
a newspaper of old. I really don´t care for sports but still I pay for that
section of the whole package too because some segment of readers like it.
So to summarily demand removal of one part of the newspaper
or this site for that matter that you don´t seem to enjoy seems very strong.
Think of Simone as the comic relief for now. Maybe she will go on to much
bigger projects later.
With all respect, I am absolutely certain that there are
parts of this site that you like that I cannot stand. Still I am glad that you
get to enjoy them and will fund them.
Let´s not be the ones to demand the demolition of that
one road off the beaten path just because we don´t intend to drive on it ever.
Do you see what I mean? I would be happy to hear your take
on it.
When the arm goes flying. Her face is priceless.
Simone’s endearing playfulness and inexperience make some people a little frowny, but I love these videos and think Tested is the perfect place for her. It’s about the journey. We get to watch her grow and learn under the incredible mentorship of Adam and the rest of the crew. For me that’s more relatable and inspiring, since the rest of the team are essentially maker-superheroes at this point. Great complement to the Tested family.
Absolutely spot-on.
I’m going to assume all the people complaining when they see Simone’s silly projects are too new here to remember all the nonsense that’s been Tested’s lifeblood over the years.
Excellent !
Excellent, agree!
hey, here’s a revolutionary concept i came up with. sounds like it could be super useful to some of you:
i don’t give a flying rat’s ass about what’s on some stupid phone app store or stupid phone features or stupid phone whatever. as far as i’m concerned, you can take away all the oh-so-smart phones and nothing of value would be lost.
tested runs articles on smartphone stuff. i’m not interested in smartphone stuff.
i don’t leave comments on these articles about how shitty smartphones are, and how superior i am by not liking them. i don’t even click on these articles. i don’t waste time looking at stuff i don’t care about, and you don’t get my smugness in your face every article.
it’s so easy even the most malfunctioning of simone’s robots can do it!
The problem might me the premium labeling. Maybe some people feel like they actually payed for this specific content and are disappointed by it. I think tested would be better without the content behind a paywall. I never got the premium membership for the extra content, just did it to support the site.
Nonetheless, I love these videos. I hope she inspires many people to just start creating.
This. I don’t complain about the 300 VR goggle reviews, because they are free, and I was able to access those even before I got the membership. The problem is that a Tested membership is pretty expensive as far as online stuff goes, and despite that we often go months without a single bit of premium content. Then when we finally do we get this…
The sad part is builds are the main reason I signed up, but this build was a huge let down. Even if it was a 100% success, it would still have been an impractical, just plain useless item. It was mildly amusing the first time I saw one of her videos, but now it’s getting really old, and you can pretty much guarantee any one of Simone’s builds will be a failure.
Failure is always an option, but it shouldn’t be the common theme.
Right on Norm, No reason tested should be a one note site and cater to only one side of it all. Its always been about all aspects of maker, tech and nerd/pop culture. Simone’s vid’s and visits to the other segments just add in another facet to a great line up. It all adds to the breadth on Tested.
It’s Taxi Driver, but with less murderous intent!
This was delightful. Was it practical? Nah, but it was fun.
I think Simone is a wonderful addition to the Tested staff and I love the tone of exploration, playfulness and frivolity she brings to the site. One doesn’t need to love everything about a site to love the site.
I’ve always looked at my premium subscription as a few bucks a month to say “hey gang.. do your thing.. I love and support what you do, even if I’m not actually interested in everything you’re doing”.
The newspaper analogy from above is quite apt.
YMMV
Well that was entertaining. Kind of cool to see the issue of problem solving getting worked through. No offence meant, but this video layout is better then the last “It might Work” video (as in pacing that is). I’m liking the series so far.
Thanks Tested team
where is the like buttom?
I have no problem with this but not my cup of tea. Prefer the builds where I can learn something. I can get plenty of comedy content other places. I agree, the newspaper analogy. Loved the previous Blade Runner content.
Sometimes she loses her mind and makes useful stuff too, check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1seENWiVxx8
If the giant spool and needle doesn’t make you smile, you might be dead inside. Also, that needle is fucking impressive.
This was fun. It looked like Simone was having some difficulty getting a strong enough grip on the figs, however. I wonder if something like a longer version of the Gorilla hands (http://mdvip-tested.md-staging.com/art/makers/587125-making-laser-cut-mechanized-hands-special-effects/), perhaps with individual thumb control – or even individual finger control – wouldn’t make it more effective. That could be a fun (or frustrating) build.
If we talk about premium content there is a discussion to be had but that does not seem to be connected to the removal of any one contributor.
Honestly, I don’t see how we would expect anyone to deliver this amount of content for free / without massive sponsored content. I know the economy online is skewed when people feel that paying around 20 cents per day for a site they visit very often is too high.
For me it’s not a choice between premium memberships with additional content or no memberships at all. The membership system is simply a way to keep this website running. Abolish the system and I bet the amount of 1 yearly subscription that the site will go bust or change significantly towards sponsored content within 1 year.
Who will take the bet? Norm?
This brightened up my day in an otherwise cold and cloudy Uppsala.
how about that studio scale millennium falcon? It’s been two years!
Firstly: Premium membership is $40 a YEAR. that’s a bit over 3 bucks a month or like 75 cents a week. Y’all need to get over yourselves about what sort of content you feel entitled to for that money. I’m perfectly happy with these videos that are along side all the other fantastic premium content on this site.
Secondly: I really look forward to these videos. Not only does Simone add a great amount of fun and silliness to this site she also shows us that not all projects need to be perfect or even be for anything serious to be interesting and educational. Sometimes when i watch videos from creators making things so well i feel inadequate or somehow paralyzed by not being able to make something as polished as them. But if Adam has taught me anything it’s that making something, ANYTHING, is a worthwhile endeavor. Simones projects reflect this and have simple goals with simple means to achieve those goals. Even if they don’t work perfectly the process of creating those objects require no less problem solving. I mean what if you have needed to join two pieces of aluminum and have been stumped on a simple yet sturdy solution that doesn’t involve welding? This video shows us that pop rivets are really simple to apply to such a problem. Just the process of making the arm structure is useful to see someone work through. And once you’ve made the “shitty” version you almost immediately see how it can be done better (or it could end there and that’s fine).
So yeah. I love these videos. Keep them coming. And if you don’t like them that’s absolutely fine but saying she needs to leave the team because her projects don’t meet your personal expectations is just a dick thing to say. Take your 75 cents a week with you if you’re gonna be like that.
Why not just use a 3.25mm drill instead of wiggling the drill about for the rivets?
That ending though, bloody amazing.
I agree that Simone makes the most useless things that that is her pitch and I love it, she’s super entertaining and funny, and I’m glad she’s working with tested now, but Adam is still our senpai 😛
I agree as well with the premium thing being, mainly, just for supporting the work Tested does. I don’t mind at all that some video’s might not be of a supposed “premium” content and I like to have a bit of simple making/comedy in the mix. I’m not a maker, but I am someone who wants to learn. I actually think just trying dumb things like this, makes you learn about all aspects of building something. I enjoy it. 🙂
Just putting in my word in support of Simone: While my opinion is that of only one person, I really enjoy the air of levity she brings to the table. I sincerely hope that a few grumpy folks don’t scare you off, Simone.
Thanks for providing great customer service and doing a wonderful job at Tested. Tested isn’t all about the projects, it’s about the people; people like you keep me subscribing. Cheers and have a wonderful Christmas.
For what its worth, i think Simone is a great addition to the team. Tested has put up some incredibly goofball ideas over the years, and Simone is both making and teaching us that messing around and having fun is OK. Her message for girls to get out and do what they want is also something worth supporting.
Keep it up!
I wonder if it could be made to extend with a cable attached to your shoulder- like to a backpack strap so when you reach out your arm the cable attached to the wrist will pull the shitty robot arm out- extending it. Instead of whipping it or swinging your arms. Spring loading the return. This could be a great mobility device. So someone in a wheel chair could reach a cabinet or something. I love the idea Simone. You are a great addition to my favorite show!😊
Simone: Snort laughing is so geeksexy.
Swedes, Danes, Germans, all united with underarm/Unterarm 🙂
I also think you should get premium to support the stuff that is public, not to “buy that additional content”
I was just going to say, “Be careful of those drawer rails. The zinc stops are the first thing to break, and the drawer goes flying.” And then the zinc stop broke…
when Simone first described her project i was imagining a lot more DUCT TAPE. however her idea worked as desired.
I know there’s risk of her going away but I really like what Simone brings to this site! I want to express support and interest in seeing more stuff like this
Echoing the comments re:Simone. Making doesn’t always have to be serious, and there’s no need for makers to take themselves so seriously that they can’t laugh at one another. Adam’s duck bomb ring a bell?
I love the silliness of it all. Great video!
oh my god i just realized that our arms are geometrically designed to deliver things to our mouth.
have i never noitced this before? did i miss that day in school? if the two parts of the arm are different lengths, you cannot deliver items to the mouth so well.
Simone has to retract the arm otherwise she cannot eat the fig!
think about this.
how many arms deliver food to their mouth?
whales flippers – no.
dolphins – no.
(i choose these because they are mammals, younger than dinosaurs, and used to have arms before they left land for the deepest blue)
tyrannosaurus? no not really.
then i look online for arm skeletons.
lizards – no
frogs – not exactly
bats – no!
horses? no!
elephants – they use their tusk!
giraffes – no
wow… we are one of the few animals where the arm has to be proportion so we can deliver things to our mouth! that is so weird.
you know who else does this maybe is insects.
but then this brings a question – do robots need humanoid arms since robots do not eat with their mouth?
Screw the haters.
As for the build… I would point out that drawers don’t tend to get whipped out at any great speed/force like Fig-erine was doing. No go make them out of adamantium. (I almost spelt it fig-urine… )
I believe in this video Simone’s superhero name would be…
Wolver-QUEEN of Shitty Robots.
That was great fun.
I must say that I really enjoy watching Simone learn how to work with new tools and materials. As someone that isn’t terribly good at making, watching her grow as a builder inspires me as well.
Now, I’m off to buy some aluminum strips and a rivet gun for my steampunk mechanical arm.
Absolutely right. Simone is the addressable character that represents “us” who wish we were more capable as makers: she makes things, but with a humanistic and humorous approach that _celebrates_ the inevitable failure of prototypes. Half the fun of Mythbusters was to see Adam and (to a lesser extent) Jamie develop and iterate on solutions… the automatic crossbow comes to mind. Simone perfectly embodies that spirit of “make it and see where it can be better” rather than being paralyzed by all the ways it could go wrong and never making anything.

Simone and her work have been an ace addition to the Tested family. If her videos are not for you then don’t watch them, even if you’re a Premium member. Would you tell Netflix to remove all the films and shows that you didn’t like?
This brightened my day.
Simone always puts a smile on my face (read as sometimes raucous laughter) and as someone who doesn’t exactly know what they are doing most of the time, but problem solves and makes workable solutions, I find her content is very relatable to.
I also love the fact that she shines in a way few of us do. Approaching the world in a child like way is not a bad thing. We as a species do not play enough in our work. We take everything so damn seriously and put down those who do not do the same. Remember guys that she can read these comments and that she is a person with feelings.
Also if you are quibbling over how your precious subscription is being spent then this is a pair of draw slides, some plastic arms, and stuff Adam prob had laying around (pennies). If it bothers you that much you bought a poster and these guys get to make videos, jeez.
This was a delightful project and I hope she keeps up the good work.
One request, can I be spared when her robot army takes over the Earth?
Love this! A bit more detail around one specific technique used in the build (in this case, I would love to learn more detail about your aluminum-bending process and how you learned how to get the shape you’re looking for) as well as some reflection and lessons learned at the end would really be helpful to me, personally. Otherwise, I just really appreciate the creativity and ingenuity inherent in these types of project.
Linear motion. Suck it haters!
Wait… it’s only possible through the use of ball bearings! Will Simone ever escape rotary motion!? Ooooohhhh who cares.
Great vid, laughed at the end. A+ would watch again.
Simone’s great. Love the fact that she curses a lot and is not afraid to make fun of loaded* subjects.
(* mostly for viewers/visitors from the USA)
That pneumatic riveter looks like something from the 80’s XD
Simone isn’t a fig plucker,
or a fig plucker’s son,
but she’ll pluck figs
till the fig plucker comes.
(Say out loud as fast as you can.)
So premium members receive beautiful drawings of Adam’s creations. Fingers crossed we get the same blue print esque art from Simone!
You get paid to do this! And you can swear! Good job!
Just wanted to add my support to keeping Simone in the Tested family. Her projects may be goofy, but her intent and the her work methodology is completely serious. You can see it in her face when she is working. Keep up the great work Tested!!
I can’t believe the negativity towards Simone. She’s doing a great job. The most absurd criticism I’ve heard is that it’s impractical. Impractical? The most recent premium content is 3 people putting a LEGO set together.
To be fair, I’m only halfway through the video, so I don’t yet know if she’ll be able to pick figs Wolverine-style, but I’ve already gotten some practical advice from watching – a brand of pop-rivet puller that apparently doesn’t break on the first use.
Keep up the good work Simone!
Haha, wonderful. Can’t wait to see more of these!
Great video, I love Simone !! I didn’t expect the arm extensions to actually work ahah
Magnificent, My Queen! Those figs don’t stand a chance!
Can someone recommend a good pop rivet gun?
Yeah, remove Simone and hire Chuck Knowhow. He always knows what he’s talking about, always works from plans, never makes a mistake and his use of tools is flawless.
“You gotta fig that need pickin’?” lmao
Simone never fails to make me laugh!
I’m glad to have Simon on the Tested crew and her videos are a welcome part of premium. I hope Tested puts out more videos like this, with her. Also although she may claim otherwise she has some serious skills when it comes to making.
I was a big fan of Simon’s videos before she joined tested I think she’s a great addition to the team. If you don’t like the content Simon currently does for Tested you could always make suggestions for future projects you’d rather see her do. Once she recovers from her surgery I’m sure she’ll be dong more tested content. People are more receptive to constructive suggestions then someone saying “Please remove Simone from tested Her stuff never works and she is too silly.” I know I’m about a year late but I thought I’d share my two cents.
Grate Video! The end was so funny! ha!
