Tested: Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera
Our video producer Joey tests and reviews the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, giving you a behind-the-scenes look at how he’s used this small formfactor camera for a variety of Tested shoots, and its post-production workflow. Here’s how we used the BMMCC for timelapses, mounting in vehicles, and even on extended trips abroad.

Michael Aranda WhatImDoingRightNow on youtube has been using the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera for a couple of years now, he’s been having issues with battery life and build quality, the picture quality looked great but the mic mount was all over the shop until it fell off, and the built in mic was piss poor. I see they got rid of the battery door issue by having externals but for the price I just couldn’t trust the Micro not to be rattley garbage in a couple of months.
Always enjoy the gear talks. Were considering to put this on a drone. How sturdy is it? How hot does it get during operation in case one has to put in an enclosure for weather protection? The cable tree seems rather messy for a drone build and there is little info the controller that could be integrated into a drone build, you probably have to build something yourself?
Thanks Joey, not at all too technical. Its good to introduce new technical jargon and insight into advance techniques and thinking. Maybe an extension of that is to back into some of the more technical and initially obtuse details and decisions and turn them into additional content that explains them in more detail. For example, it would be great to see how a custom portable shoulder rig is designed and constructed. Details about decisions, where/how to measure, parts you make vs parts you can buy. Another example might be color editing, a bit about tool, raw video color adjusting, and how to understand the value and difference in the flat camera footage and its richness to adjust vs bad image capture and how it can’t be adjusted in the same way. Neither need to be tutorials, but would be fun and interesting for some and an entree into places and tools to pursue.
Looking forward to more.
i agree, this was a super informative look behind the scenes, and just the right spot of techiness. i’m no video person, but have techy interests, some of them in adjacent fields. as, i guess, is the case for the majority of the tested audience.
this was overview enough to make complete sense to me, yet specific enough to introduce new (to me) things. also, your way of presenting things & concepts works really well for me. you really know your stuff, but talk in a more informal, off the cuff manner. can’t wait to see more of these. 🙂
I’m still looking for that right Blackmagic to invest my (personal) cash into.
Love the gear talk, Joey. Keep it coming! (One AD/AV Eng to another)
Great work. Very informative!
Great work!
Thanks for doing this review. Like many below one of these has been on my shopping list for better aerial videos largely because of the global shutter (at lower frame rates)- a massive benefit over a gopro.
Any suggestions for a 1000$ range (if its really worth while to go up a few hundred, than so be it) cinema camera? I love making videos, and i have access to a few DSLR’s, but i would love to get my own gear. any suggestions for someone starting out would be appreciated. I’m definitely interested in production, and not afraid to color grade. Thank you in advanced!
Good stuff Joey, I’m still loving my pocket cinema camera. Do you use a mostly RAW workflow with these cameras, or ProRes?
