Show and Tell: Star Trek LCARS Mechanical Keyboard

We put together a custom mechanical keyboard inspired by Star Trek’s LCARS computer interface! This keyset is released by Roddenberry Entertainment and designed by a diehard Trek fan, fitting on a milled keyboard chassis to evoke the bridge of the Enterprise-D. It’s gorgeous!

  1. The cream chassis confuses me, surely it would look better on black like the screen background.
    Keycaps are great though!

That threw me off too. The cream color seems to harken to old mechanical IBM keyboards and the like. Maybe that’s what they were going for?

  3. the actual enterprise hardware was cream-ish, wasn’t it? as in: the parts that house the black screens.

Perhaps. I’m watching TNG now. I watched it a bit as a kid when it was airing and now going through it as an adult. I’m not as intimately familiar (and wayyyyy more of a Star Wars fan boy) Anytime I see LCARS inspired anything, it’s always those Easter Egg pastel colored interface set on black. Black always is the predominant color in my mind.

  4. not meaning to discount your intuition re characteristic LCARS colours – i had the same initial thought, and it took me a moment to link that distinct case colour to something enterprise.

i, too, think pastel on black would’ve been the visually stronger and more immediately identifyable choice. probably even with the central letter block as black with pastel legends.

  5. I think I’d prefer smooth glossy black paint, or perhaps black acrylic so it looks more like glass, and a bit larger — maybe an extra inch of empty area around the keyboard with exaggerated rounded corners so it looks more like a panel. That cream colour really kills it for me.

  6. I don’t give two hoots about the color – I’m always more interested to pause the playback when I see a CAD/CAM program on the screen. At the 0:44 mark, I couldn’t help but notice that’s some seriously OLD Mastercam running there. From the screen menu and icon style, I’m going to speculate that it’s Mastercam V9 (circa 2003) – yikes! Quite a contrast to the modern Fusion 360 that it appears Ryan designed the chassis with.

  7. The CM Storm series is the best… until you spill your coffee on it 🙁

The Vengeance K65 is a serviceable replacement, miss the hell out of those Brown keys tho

  8. I just thru my RGB Razer Blackwidow chroma v2 mech keyboard in the trash…It is so yesterday compared to this lol
