Tested: Sony 1000XM3 Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Norm shares one of his favorite new pieces of kit, Sony’s 1000XM3 active noise-cancelling headphones. We were surprised by how far noise-cancelling technology has come, without sacrificing audio quality. Here’s a quick demo to test and show how these headphones cut out loud sounds compared to passive ear protection.

Great testing that I haven’t seen portrayed in any other video. That being said, I wish you had shown off the features (I think there’s two of them) that allow ambient noise in with the headphones still on.
The active/adjustable noise cancelation of the Surface Headphones make them the most attractive to me, and I’m curious how other headphones handle that sort of stuff.

I have the Sony 1000XM2’s and love them. Headphones are my “thing” and these are very very good for Hi-Res Audio (anywhere), and watching movies on an airplane. The hinges on my 1+-year-old set have worn their hinges loose from folding them – even though I only use them less than 2X per month for 3-6 hours. These seem like a significant upgrade, and I will probably buy them. Thanks for the graphic demo, Norm.
The ambient sound passthrough comes in handy when there is an announcement on a long flight. I do wish this feature would pause what you were watching in iTunes.
Would love to get a comparison to the latest Bose QC35 headphones. I listened to the Sony 1000MX3 at CES2019, and as a long time Bose noise canceling headphone user, I felt the Sonys had higher music fidelity. But my test was short and informal. Does anyone know if these two headphones have been put in a showdown? And if there is a difference, is it worth upgrading?
wish I had access to the Bose QC35s. I know Adam has been a Bose user in the past, so I can see if that’s the model he has. But music fidelity was definitely one of the things that impressed me with the Sony’s, using my planar magnetic’s as the baseline.
Good test but too bad that you didn’t include the latest Bose QC 35. According to other tests I have watched on YouTube the Sonys fall a little bit short of Bose. You do have some more options in Sonys app, but sound quality, noise reduction and comfort is till in Bose favour.. I’m about to replace my old Bose headphones and would really like to know how you think they do in comparison with the ones from Sony.

I tested a bunch of over-the-ear headphones and too fell in love with the HiFi Man/Massdrop HE-4xx headphones for high-quality audio. Excellent pick in 2017.
