Adam Savage Visits National Air and Space Museum’s Restoration Hangar!
This was one of the MAJOR highlights of our DC trip: the National Air and Space Museum’s Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar, where objects conservator Lisa Young gives Adam Savage a tour of the artifacts currently being preserved! In addition to geeking out over an LM cockpit simulator, a “lunar rover, qualification test unit” and the Skylab 4 command module, Adam learns a LOT about the craft of conserving such historic pieces. (We had to practically drag him out.)

Amazing video. Love Adam’s “fan boy” attitude about the whole thing…I’d be peeing my pants too…
off the charts jealous. thanks for this look behind the scenes.
This was way more interesting than I expected. Who knew hearing about millions of holes being caulked would be so fascinating?
I wish to nominate Lisa Young as an honorary member of Tested.
ADAM: Do you mind if I take some pictures?
MARY: Sure. We have high res pictures too.
ADAM: (calmly responds) oh that’s great;
ADAM (interior monologue): YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!
The water/urine dumps are hemispheres to reduce surface tension adhesion (and subsequent ice accumulation) from the venting liquid.
A flat surface promotes surface tension, a sharp point wouldn’t stand up to reentry heat, but a hemisphere is a good middle ground for both.
I hope that this inspires Adam to create some more canvas sail bags and additions to his Savage Industry EDC bag range. Perhaps some more inserts for the EDC one such as cubes for camera gear. Seeing all that glorious white fabric in this video reminded me of his product range.
Truly absolutely amazing !!!
