Podcast - This Is Only a Test
Episode 346 – April Foolish – 4/7/16
Norm, Jeremy, and Will meet up this week to discuss the new Star Wars Rogue One trailer, pooly-implemented April fools gags, a new 3D printing technology, and Tesla’s Model 3 pre-orders. Plus, with the the release of the HTC Vive, we share our thoughts on the hardware and learn about Will’s new VR show!
The Oculus data collection serivce that connects to Facebook (OSVR64) can be easily fixed by modifying your advanced firewall rules (change the default action for that entry to …block). Simple. Add a backup (just in case).
It’s actually OVRServer_x64.exe, block that process in your firewall.
I love the FOO VR channel, the arms are a bit terrifying and make my funny bone tingle but the platform and concept is second to none!
Having an CV1 makes you an paria in some places as the excitement and anticipation turns sour. People are seriously pissed about the failed Rift launch. Possibly not more than 4000-10000 Rift are out there from initially 300,000 preorders anticipated according to Goertek estimates for 2016 (sole maker of the Rift). After creating a perfect hype for a product launch (thanks also to tested) this might delay VR development and income from software for a year. On the other hand Will has more time to finish development of FooVR.
They are saying on youtube that the dude with the staff in the trialer is Donnie Yen!!!! (thanks to Netflix, I know who that is)
Timestamps are here (Tested’s comment editor won’t let me put them here directly):

now that norm said ‘mon mothra’, we really need that star wars/godzilla mashup. and it’s the godzilla director directing rogue one! half life three confirmed, or something.
Great Episode!!!
I love when Will is on. Jeremey and Kishore are both fantastic, and I like them both a ton, but the combo of Kishore, Jeremy, and Norm is too much of the same across the whole table and not enough contrast of personalities.
PLEASE PLEASE I hope the Foo show can be brought to Gear VR. That’s probably the extent of the VR in our house until the bigger platforms mature & prove their staying power. Plus min spec pc hardware costs have to come down a bit for us to consider it.
alaska airlines is based in seattle but they do have salmon of their flight. I have never flown virgin and have heard its very good but alaska has always been my favorite.
You guys were talking about 3D printing and how it’s not quite push-and-play/widely available yet; have you guys heard of the Olo kickstarter campaign?

While there are definitely some drawbacks to the design (small printing volume, uses your phone for hours, messy resin, etc.) it’s definitely the first real step in the right direction for getting 3D printing to the masses. If you buy a cheap, used smart phone and bundle it with the Olo it seems like it’d be a great gift for kids who like to build things. Maybe not so much for professionals who are using 3D printing for actual rapid prototyping and mold part-making, but still an awesome product nonetheless. I’d be curious to hear what you guys think on a future podcast! I’m sure Sean Charlesworth is all over it and will be ordering one to test.
Great podcast this week!
thirteen days is about the discovery and buildup of the first strike weapons on cuba. really good movie
I came real close to a spit take with my coffee with the Ultron line.
Will, whilst we miss you here as a regular I can see now why you felt compelled to jump in to VR and I will watch how your company and ideas grow with great interest. Good luck but please continue to return to Tested as often as you can as it is great hearing you on the podcast
The one problem with plug-in hybrids & full electric cars that people seem to keep forgetting is that they only work if you own a stand alone house. Apartment dwellers & condo owners will be more left out in the cold with no place to plug in & recharge. Very few apartment building owners & condo hoa’s will willing to pony up the money to place chargers in all the parking areas.
You guys should look into NVBots 3D printer, it’s the first automated printer, where you can essentially send multiple prints to the printer, without needing someone there to watch it. It’s pretty interesting.
Large capacity cars like the Tesla might not make the cut, but other electric cars charge fine (overnight) using a standard 110 VAC outlet.
If you are genuinely worried about the Virgin brand disappearing then move to the UK. I’m not exaggerating when I say you can use Virgin broadband internet to secure money from Virgin finance to purchase a flight from Virgin airlines to the Virgin music festival which you can travel to from the airport on a Virgin train while you listen to music from Virgin records playing on a mobile phone with a Virgin mobile SIM card in it. Branson doesn’t own all those brands any more but he makes sure they keep the name when he sells up (on this side of the pond at least, dunno if that’s going to happen with the Alaska – Virgin deal) but his name still is going to be out there while all of us are pushing up daisies.
