Shop Tips: How To Use Spray Paint Nozzle Tips

This week’s tip from Frank Ippolito is about actual tips–for spray cans, that is. Frank shows Norm how he uses different nozzle caps for different effects when spray painting props and signage in his shop. Whether you run a large workshop or just work out of your garage, we want to hear your shop tips that you rely on in your projects. Post them in the comments below!

  1. When a spray can was used up, I would toss the nozzle into a jar of mineral sprits as a place to collect them. The mineral spirits is mellow enough it isn’t going to dissolve the plastic of the nozzle, but should keep the tip clean. So when I need a tip I have a jar of them.

These designer spray cans with custom tips are new to me. Thanks as usual for the esoterica.

  2. The quickest and easiest way to keep the tip clean and clog free
is to turn the can upside down and give it a quick shot,
you will see a little paint come out and then just the gas, then wipe the tip off with a rag
This will ensure that the tip is free of paint, and ready to go for the next time

  3. You know, if you want to spend a bit less on the caps, just get an ultra sonic cleaner…water with a few drips of a paint stripper works great at keeping them clean…same as with airbrush parts.
