Sean and Norm use our office’s new Universal Laser Systems laser cutter to fabricate the first piece of Jen Schachter’s beautiful maker puzzle. Our office remix will use both wood and acrylic parts, and we discuss some safety protocols for laser cutting this kind of project.

Is there an ETA for posting the SXSW Maker Puzzle ‘Puzzle Piece Assembly’ filmed at the Thinkery?
I don’t know what your Liability limits are, but your position as a dispersal point for safety on new to hobbyists equipment would be excellent . While I think every MakerSpace should have a copy of “Artist Beware, Updated and Revised: The Hazards in Working with All Art and Craft Materials and the Precautions Every Artist and Craftsperson Should Take, Rev Upd Edition” or several , the auxiliary material is occasionally not easy to find and we tend to want to play with the toy not read a safety manual written by a person being paid by the word not the thought. Perhaps Adam’s Nation of Makers could host if you can’t, and you could give a link to that on your site. Most of you seem to be buying new material that you know the provenance of not dumpsterdiving of unknown material. Love that you brought this up! I have been part of several discussions through Nation of Makers about machine and material safety and operating procedures. There’s actually a whole “Risk Management” channel within their Slack team. On a side note, I’m also working on writing just such safety manuals for all our shops at a makerspace here in Baltimore. Would be very interested in a definitive, user-friendly/user-made “Makerspace” version of Material Safety Data Sheets.

First piece done! Good fun. Took a bit of software juggling to get the .ai file to the laser but no big deal.
Just noticed that my bottle is missing. Somewhere in the bowels of the laser cabinet I’ll bet.
Loving this, I am going to give this a shot at some point. I would love to see a lot more laser projects here. J.
