Customizing a Pelican Case with Our Laser Cutter

Sean works on a quick project to improve our camera lens storage using the shop’s Universal Laser Systems laser cutter. This custom Pelican Case storage topper helps label our gear and protect the breakout foam from wearing down over use!

  1. Great segment, thanks for showing that you messed up twice and great idea using cardboard as a test first.

  2. It seems like high density foam would be a lot better for the toper instead of rigid plastic. The lenses (especially the tall ones) are a bit more at risk for wear and damage when they bump into the acrylic, both in transit and just pulling them in and out of the case. The high contrast looks really nice and I think is a good element of this improvement to replicate.

  3. I am not sure that making this top cover out of plastic is good idea.

Because lenses that stick out higher than plastic now have rigid edge to bump into.

Imagine big impact on side of the case. Without plastic lenses just moves inside and shock absorbed by foam.

But now with rigid layer there, high lences will bump in to plastic, in case of such impact.

  4. Thanks for the comments and good points. Acrylic is not my first choice – just what we had in house. I built a few hundred like this for NYU out of ABS with no problems. Granted those cases were a bit deeper and the lenses sat well down inside the foam. We were also using the ABS topper for labeling. As I mentioned above and in the vid, thin high-density foam is a really good choice too.

  5. Nice setup with the Pelican case.

You guys should check out LensPacks to hold those lenses. When you take the lenses out of the case, you won’t need to deal with the rear lens cap and it’s ready to go onto the camera.

  6. Like others, I like the idea but not the rigid acrylic. Can you cut a sheet of foam (1″) easily?

  7. I would like to see a segment about laser-cutting foam for a case, drawer, or other use case. What foams are safe to lase, how to structure the cuts, etc.
