Adam Savage’s Maker Tour: Artisan’s Asylum

Located outside Boston, Artisan’s Asylum is a 40,000 square-foot, 400-member community fabrication center that includes everything from 3D printers to a 125-year-old arbor press. And to say Adam Savage loved every minute there is an understatement. (This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation and Chevron.)

  1. I wish there was one of these in my city. I have so many projects and I don’t have the tools or skills to accomplish them. I’d love to learn.

  2. I want to start one. I just need a book to read to get started. I have read the Make Magazine articles with Artisan Asylum but it doesn’t cover everything. Love this video series and I am jealous of these places

  3. So glad you guys are enjoying this one. It was SUCH a pleasure to film, and we have another video profiling some of the artisans and their work coming out next week. One note: Adam had flown to Boston on the red-eye, and we’d filmed all morning at MIT, so he was a bit tired by the time we got to Artisan’s Asylum. I mention that because of all the YouTube comments about his demeanor. He was just tired! Honest!

  4. Adam hung around long after he probably should have left and he was very gracious and took photos with anyone who wanted. So let me just say that while he may have been exhausted, he was wonderful and very accommodating. He’s welcome back any time! 🙂

  5. About 4(?) years or so ago the Asylum held a weekend long “How to make a Makerspace” event where they had panels and speakers and presentations and all kinds of stuff about getting your own space off the ground. Myself and one of the other co-founders of our Makerspace attended as we were about 8-12 months in to the process of getting started ourselves. Afterward I felt horribly guilty because all I wanted to do was move to Somerville and be a part of the Asylum. “Inspiring” is absolutely the best adjective to describe that place. I can’t wait to see another video showcasing some of the stuff being made in the endless sea of individual spaces everyone had. It’s been my gold standard for a Makerspace ever since.

  6. Adam – I wish that I had known that you were in Boston. The fellow building the giant fighting robots is a friend of mine, and I taught classes at the Asylum for their first few years. If you find yourself over here again, I would be quite glad to arrange a visit to the world’s pre-eminent legged robotics lab (wink wink).

  7. Very Cool! I work about 20 minutes away from there! Did not know it existed, I will have to check it out!

  8. this place is amazing! i literally just came back from my shop, saw the opening, and wanted to go right back. 🙂

the spectrum of activities and approaches is a real thing of beauty. i’m about as much a loner as one can be, but i think i’d work in a space like this. having so many different crafts neighbouring each other, cross-pollinating. just imagine the amount of knowledge you’d pick up during a 10 minute break’s stroll! and not only a variety of crafts, but making mind sets, too! from replicating historical working practise over appreciating old machinery to the completely modern – that’s just lovely. all the best to everyone who’s keeping a place like this alive.
