Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Rasputin’s Mecha Glove from Hellboy

Adam Savage shows off his in-progress build of the Rasputin Mecha Glove from the Hellboy movie. The amazing prop was only in the movie for a few moments, but it made a huge impression and Adam has been meticulously recreating all its complicated parts. It’s coming along nicely!

Can you clarify the ounce setting of your small setting? I got this Cuisinart unit because I had a gift card and it has a 4,6,8,10 AND 12 ounce setting. I had been using 8 and 10 for the most part, but I wonder if using a 6 ounce setting and making two cups would yield a better flavor?

I did see the Donut House “Travel Mug size”. I’m assuming those are made for the 12 ounce setting?

  2. just curious, but from a traffic perspective, wouldn’t it be better to link to the page here rather than directly to the youtube video?

  3. yes but redditors are pretty picky about youtube embeds. always strive for the path of least resistance. we just want people to watch the video! (and subscribe to the channel 🙂 )

  4. I think that they shot all of these videos together. Short of some ridiculous editing, they’re going to keep saying man cave. You can stop complaining about it in this series of videos now.

  5. You have to love Adam. The guy is just so passionate about everything he does and seems love sharing that love and knowledge with others. It is infectious.

He really is. Glad to see more videos of the Tested crew w/ Adam. Hopefully some videos soon w/ Jamie as well? *wishful thinking* 😛

  6. I love the wave of recent Adam content on the site. I’m far from a handy guy myself put I can’t help getting completely fascinated by the passion put into these projects.

Also. What was that rubber monster head at the top-right of the screen at 3:50? First thought was something from Sam ‘n Max. But that’s not possible, right?

  7. Bah! Comment about use of “man cave” here!

Seriously, though, this is some cool stuff. I wish I was good enough with my hands (and in a financial position) that I could do stuff like this. It’d be so much fun.

  8. It’s Adam’s word and that’s what they are going with. I agree with the others, but we will just have to live with it.

  9. What’s wrong with “man cave”? That’s such a small thing to complain about.

    These videos are great!

  10. Wil has an awesome t-shirt. Also, what’s up with that muppet hanging on the wall in the background?

  11. The title for this segment sounds like a total Cumface-ism. I know it’s what Adam himself calls it, but Will tends to come up with phrases that can be taken sexually more than any other dude I can think of. I love it.

  12. That is so cool. As if Adam wasn’t already one of my top 25 personal heroes. Not to sound creepy, but it’s almost like… I wish Adam was my dad. Not like my own dad was inept at fixing stuff/man work, but all the stuff I learned from him in terms of handyman stuff was like hanging shelves, building little doodads like spice racks, and we made a brick housing for our mailbox. Nothing that requires the heavy machinery or metalworking skills.

  13. Wil has an awesome t-shirt. Also, what’s up with that muppet hanging on the wall in the background?

I’m sure Adam is a muppet/puppet fan, in one of his talks he said that his dad used to work freelance doing animated segments for Sesame Street.

  14. Hah! Adam’s catching on. He’ll be “I’m Adam-ing” without hesitation in no time. Glove looks nuts. When they were talking abou a glove from Hellboy I thought they were talking about that chain-grappling-arm from Hellboy 2. This is awesome-er.

  15. Awesome stuff guys, I love to see Adams passion and dedication to this stuff. If there was just a little bit more of him in everyone the world would be far more amazing.

  16. Man, I wouldn’t even know where to start with something like that. I wouldn’t even know where to start with the cardboard man Adam wrote about.

  17. I am loving this new adam based content. I was really turned off by the whole, “Jamie and Adam’s Tested.com” thing but now I am totally on board. Tested is a great as it ever was with the added bonus of more awesome stuff than before.

  18. That piece at the end, not hard to do. It’s hard to do manually like Adam did but I’ve been working in CAD/CAM and CNC milling for almost 10 years and I would have something like that in a couple of hours. It all depends on how you make it. Doing it manually is always harder. Doing something automatically is incredibly simple but costs a hell of a lot more because of the machines needed.

  19. I’m afraid the mummified frog is an important part of raising the dead Adam. I have doubts that the glove will work with out it.

    Great effort though.

  20. Adam has a functioning time machine stowed away somewhere in that place. I’m convinced. 0__o

  21. Adam’s passion shows through with every word out of his mouth – I love people like that. They remind me that I should maybe not play a video game today and get something done 🙂

  22. Nazi propaganda 32? Or is it the chinese sun-thing that goes CCW? I can never remember.

The Swastika symbol (and variations, in both orientations) has been used independently by a wide range of cultures from around the world for thousands of years, it is a fairly simple construction after all.

But in this case it is Nazi-branding, the character of Hellboy was summoned as part of a Nazi Occultist plot to turn the tide of WW2 in their favour.

  23. What’s with all the linguistic hate? Is “man cave” too popular? Are we trying to hipster it out of existence now?

  24. Love the Mecha Glove!!! I would like to build one, I have subscribed but I haven’t received the poster, can I still get it somehow in eletronic format, at least I will print it myself. Remains the Best thing ever built for me!
