Adam Savage on Working Smart at Maker Faire 2013

Adam surprised the crowd at this year’s Bay Area Maker Faire by riding in on a giant steampunk Nautilus vehicle. From the top of that machine, he gave his annual speech to makers, talking about the value of working hard and working smart, and giving advice about how to find a career that utilizes maker skills.

  1. …and *my* big regret growing up was that I didn’t have a role model like Adam Savage to inspire me. Well done sir.

  2. Cool talk. Beeing an avid still untitled viewer I love to see how Adam took the idea from the podcast one step further.

But oh the crash zooms…agony 😀

  3. Hey this sound vaguely like one of the still untitled pod casts. But this is advice that is so important, in every job you have not just in the maker field. I work in computer repair/logistics currently, and i would love to be able to play videos of your speeches at the maker fairs as part of the training i have to give the new hires. Just so they can understand the quality’s i look for.

  4. wow!!! I want the text of this speech!! I truly want it as a motivation and to be read by some people I know (I’ll have to translate it first!! 😛 ) This is totally how I think and how I discovered my job!

Thank you Adam and I hope to meet you some day and have a bit of time to tell yo how much you rise my self-esteem and how you so nicely voice what I think! :’)

  5. I wish I could get the people that work under me to understand that, or even the person that works above me. Yet perhaps it is as Adam said…. “don’t work for those people.”

  6. Walking around Maker Faire yesterday was an awesome experience.

As a maker, I spend a lot of time thinking about projects, spanning from everyday fixes to enormous undertakings that would require years of dedication.

It is very inspiring walking around Maker Faire and seeing people who are standing behind their ideas, and in many cases turning them into full fledged businesses, and finding an audience that will actively seek them out for their passion.
