Making the Stop-Motion Holochess for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Note: This video contains a very minor spoiler about a special effects sequence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens] One of the many surprises in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that delighted fans was the appearance of the Dejarik holochess game on the Millennium Falcon. We went behind-the-scenes at Tippett Studio to watch Phil Tippett and his team create the stop-motion animation sequence, and learn a secret about how this cameo connects to the original Star Wars!

  1. I guess this is the first behind the scenes stuff after the release of the movie,. I like it!

Looking forward to hearing the podcast Len 🙂

Some basic questions if creaturegeek hasn´t already been recorded:

    When was this shot?

How much sculpting had to be done after the photogrametry?

Were they 3d printed before molding? On what kind of printer?

Did all the original figures survive? Or did some have to referenced from the movie?

    —-

The finishing on them is superb, I jumped in the seat when they came on.

  2. Lovely video. If I send a file with Portuguese subtitles, would you put it on the Youtube player? I would love to share this here in Brazil. Thanks!

  3. Holy cow – that was awesome! Thanks guys!

How long have you fellows been sitting on this? Was this actually filmed at the time the sequence was being animated or is this “… a dramatization based on actual events…”

If it was filmed during the actual production, I can only imagine the NDAs that must have been involved! You lucky bastards:)

  4. I think we filmed this in March, when they were animating this… but yeah, all of us have been sitting on this for a while. Though, I can’t imagine how hard it was for who actually worked on this sequence (with name in credits!) — to stay quiet about this for 7 or so months!

  5. recorded it a few days ago, will go up on friday! hopefully answer your questions. i forgot everything that i said already.
