Building a Rancor Costume (from Tested: The Show!)
This summer, we brought the Rancor to roam the streets of San Diego Comic-Con–our most ambitious project to date. Effects artist Frank Ippolito brings the Rancor (aka Francor) out for its first public appearance since then to talk about how he built it, lessons learned, and what it was like wearing the suit!

Great video! I feel like there’s something big missing from all these Rancor videos, though. It’s that you’ve never talked about the skin of the whole body, on top of the foam. I’d love to see how that was sculpted or molded or however it was made. It just seems like you made the foam body, made the head, and then the rest of the body was magically covered in wrinkly skin.
i posted this comment because I’m having trouble posting in another thread. Now I can’t figure out how to delete it. With that being said, you always do amazing work, Frank. Fantastic.
I had the impression that there were more Frank Build videos of the rancor, they had some great first ones. And it looked like they were set for one or two more. Hopefully we will see them soon
i have some time-lapse of putting on the skin and texture, somehow it was overlooked for the videos. we ARE planning on one more video next year with it, after i make some upgrades. so I’ll make sure to remind them to stick the time lapse in about that.
The detail on the back is so cool. It’s a shame we don’t get to see more of it in the videos. Then of course I had to Google ‘Jabba’s Palace’, but I’ve only found t-shirts so far, and none with the design’s on Frank’s shirt.
