That wasn’t there! He did a speed edit, I swear! 😀 I wouldn’t hop over a big thing like someone suggesting a 580. Plus, I agree with you on the HTPC + GPU = bad line of thought, which I even more strongly recommend now that I know he stuck a 580 in there.
What resolution are you gaming at? At 1920×1200 or less, a 580 is overkill. You want to look for a 570 max, more likely a 560/6950 if you don’t mind a bit of an upgrade a good 2 years or so from now.

This series has been the one of the best things to come out of the new Tested.
Holy shit, that was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid and I’d almost completely forgotten about it. Pretty crazy to see it show up here, though I do wish we coulda seen the rest of the backpack since I’d have to imagine that’s where most of the time got spent. Kinda confused on the engine parts that he said were cast resin though, does that mean the welding marks are faked and none of the exhaust tubing is metal?
The backpack was sent out to be plated, so lets hope they’ll really do a follow-up once he gets it back from plating and completed =)
He did say it was resin, which makes sense, carrying around a metal rocket pack and costume at a place like Comic Con would be intense. I’m guessing someone on the Replica Prop Forum made a run of resin-castings of the exhaust tubes and the backback body, which Adam then bought, built and finished.
Usually, once someone makes a really good version of a prop and wants to share with the community, they’ll take a list of interested buyers. Depending on the project and process involved, the interested buyers might pay a deposit in order to pay for production, and then the remainder of the price once a run of parts have been made.
Sometimes these runs are finished props, but often they are unpainted kits, such as fibreglass castings of major parts, with or without associated hardware. Since the finishing processes are very time consuming they would make a prop like a rocket pack really expensive, thousands of dollars. Instead, people buy a kit for a few hundred bucks, clean it up, paint and weather it, add stuff like wires, cables, lights and moving parts in order to arrive at the finished prop.
Sometimes, arriving at the level of screen-accurate detail in the original sculpt to be casted is a several-year long collaborative process of trial and error until the production run finally materializes. I suggest everyone checks the RPF out, so much amazing work.
I love Adam’s enthusiasm
I really love these visits to the work cave (manshop?). I hope to see many more. And if Jamie would let us see what he has in his shed, I’d be thrilled.
Adam has picked all the best props from the movies. Love this series.
Mooooore! I live for this stuff.
Excellent. Can’t wait to see the finished jetpack.
HAHA finally, Adam putting the fuckin cabbage on that whole “man cave” business. god that was annoying.
Should probably change the header to Adam’s Tested, Jaime doesn’t seem to be too involved.
I don’t believe Adam when he says he can’t make a rocket pack shoot out flames.
I think I am losing respect for adam savage via recent episodes of mythbusters, that show is becoming less educational and more bullshit. I am gaining respect for him via these videos. Thanks be to tested for it.
The always beautiful heat discoloration adam is going for on his braided lines looks to be that of titanium, as seen here. Perhaps a little red/orange/yellow would take it one step further?
Any word on the reels of LEDs?
I hope Adams going to add a fan for authenticity.Really cool project though.
did i miss the followup on this video?
