  1. BRING BACK BATTLE-BOTS!

Oh wow, Robot Wars is still a thing.

Now I’m totally having Robot Wars flashbacks. Those were good times.

  2. Interesting that a simple wedge robot won the past few years. From the outside it seems that a purely wedge design that can’t inflict damage just wouldn’t fare so well. Fire also seems pretty pointless since I’m sure most robots are sealed to protect from it, and it seems the tires are pretty resistant.

That last fight was pretty nuts. I would think one of those robots flipping up into that plex wall would be pretty bad news.

  3. You should check out Jamie’s bot Blendo, it was so destructive that they ended up having to give it a shared-champ status in return for retiring from the Robot Wars competition.

It was a very simple design, basically a upside-down wok with a sharp blade around the bottom edge. It spun its entire body at such high rpm that anything that contacted it would go flying into pieces, sometimes penetrating the arena lexan-shields. Jamie had to start its spin-cycle using a drill through a hole at the top of the dome, then run away…

It would likely be less dominant today exactly because the flipping-wedge style robots would be able to upturn it, even though it was *very* low to the ground. And if the wedge survived the first hit, Blendo didn’t really have a way to flip back around. Several copycat designs were also made, and it ended up loosing in BattleBots when facing robots that knew what to expect. It was ahead of its time, but quickly rendered obsolete.

It would likely be in violation of the “spin back down in 60 seconds” rule, and it wasn’t a very entertaining robot once you looked past its destructive force. Since it was spinning at such high speed, it wasn’t very mobile, so it would remain in one spot, spinning, waiting for the opponent to touch it. Very Hyneman, all function over style =p

  4. Man that last match was amazing. Any chances that you guys will try to have more cameras to shoot all the angles for next year?

Tested: the official video provider of Combots!

  5. I’m sorry but as much as i like blendo (and Mr. Jamie) i am a current competitor and i know that blendo would need a major overhaul to be within the rules now, much less to be effective…..although if you talked to Dave and Simone about ti they might let you do an exhibition fight… just saying.

  6. Robotics L.N. Haha, it was never as entertaining as it was dangerous with the earlier arena… and judging by its lack of success in its “comeback”, I think its retirement was for the better. Like any sport, the early competitors would likely not do great in modern competition 😉

It was fun seeing it on stage during the Mythbusters Live Show though, it got some chants from the SF audience. 🙂
