Maker Faire 2014: Adam Savage’s 10 Commandments of Making

Every year, Adam gives a speech at the Bay Area Maker Faire. He’s talked about intrinsic need for makers to build things, and how to work smart on projects. This year talk are his 10 tips for makers of all ages–the advice Adam would’ve given to himself when he was just starting out.

  1. Good talk….I hope you guys took a lot of pictures, really curious see what you saw.

Were there drag queens? When I imagine events in San Francisco I always think of drag queens, yeah that’s kinda of regional stereotyping and such but I mean it in the best way, drag queens with tool-belts…how about that? (it’s a lot of pressure being the first to comment).

    Anyway enjoyed the talk…thanks guys.

  2. Great talk I bet Adams voice was KILLING him after giving this speech, havn’t heard him speak so many times he was really pushing his voice here.

Adam is one of the best speakers though, always so articulate.

  3. This extended version compliments the Make one posted in the forums nicely. This one has the additional Q&A and the other one is just the ten commandments.

  4. Good speech, but I can tell Adam wanted to talk about more about process and technique more than mythbusters.. and I totally get it.

  5. Nice list, but I wish Adam had included the thing that he’s said before which has really stuck with me.

“Make that which you cannot not make.”

  6. “Make that which you cannot not make.”

I think that’s covered under #4; “Use a project to learn a skill. I don’t know about you but I need a goal to learn a skill. I can’t deconstruct and just learn welding for welding’s sake. I need to have something that only welding will bring me. Look around and find something you need to build. Something you can’t help but build.”

  7. Didn’t think this would apply to me, as I’m neither a creative or hands on practical person, (if I attempt to made or fix anything the result is bad, ugly, unsafe or any combination)
Before realised that as a Health care assistant (in a dementia/nursing home) I do (at least my best to) make something, to make people feel safe, loved, happy, cared for and well.
And actually the majority of those are also completely relivent to my job, I can/will be using them. Mythbusters to the resue again

  8. As usual, Adam was truly inspirational. One commandment that Adam missed was, “don’t be afraid to fail.” I think that, for me that is the one thing that holds me back the most. Of course, that’s ridiculous. If I screw up, the only person who is ever going to see the screw up is me. So who cares about them, even if the screw up involved, say a several hundred dollar model kit.

  9. It was a great speech by Adam, no doubt.

But, can the folks at Maker Faire (or whomever built that thing), make a sturdier platform upon which to give speeches on?! There is no excuse for making such a rickety “mouse trap”.. :-
