Hands-On with the Onewheel Electric Skateboard

At Maker Faire, we got to try the Onewheel, a self-balancing electric skateboard that uses gyros to and a single motorized wheel to propel you forward or backward. The Onewheel uses a go-kart tire, and attempts to simulate the feeling of snowboarding, but on solid asphalt. Watch to see if we gracefully carve pavement or faceplant in our first test.

  1. It’s definitely cool. But, I can think of a slew of things that I would rather spend $1,550 on..

  2. The tire “is spec’d to go 140 miles per hour, so it kinda gives you an idea what we’re going for here.”

Instant death? I realize he was kidding, but can you even imagine how far forward you’d have to lean into the wind at 140 mph?

  3. When I saw the first few videos and photos of this thing, I had trouble believing it was a real product. Looks cool, though, but the price is rather steep for a skateboard :p

  4. I’m guessing we’ll be able to buy the equivalent of this at any big-box retailer for less than $300 by Christmas 2015. T’is a very cool concept.

  5. How do you deal with kerbstones etc.? I don´t get how you´d actually use it as a last mile device.

  6. I’d love one of these, but i wonder what the maximum load is, because i’m a larger than average guy 😛

i have to agree with people the $1500 pricetag does seems quite steep, i could get a 50cc moped or even an electric moped for less than that, granted it doesn’t give you the same experience but it’s got better mileage, safety and comfort

  7. I remember the Kickstarter for this, good to see these guys doing well. Still need to get the economies of scale down on it but it could be fun.
