Building a Custom Computer Desk, Part 4

After a month of building, Will’s almost done with his custom computer desk project! In this episode, Will finishes welding the legs together, and preps the top of the desk for mounting to the frame. It’s all coming together, with lessons and tips learned from makers following along with the project. (This video was brought to you by Premium memberships on Tested. 1. I think you downplayed the fact that the angles in the legs aren’t quite the same, put yeah your right, it really doesn’t matter that much in the end.

The desk does look like it could be a bit wobbly, but there doesn’t seem to be a simple place the mount a bar that would create a triangle between the leg and the bottom of the desk. That would certainly help out though. It would take some stress off of the welds that attach the legs as well.

  2. I’m happy for ya, Will. The desk looks pretty cool, and it would appear it was a solid learning experience 🙂 I’ve really enjoyed this series, hoping for more projects like this!

  3. You mentioned on a podcast the other day that you had learned to weld, and that welding was easy. As someone who works in that industry, that bothered me a little.

After watching the video… You did pretty well for a blind guy with Parkinson’s.

Just messing with you, of course. Everyone starts off rough. Keep at it and for the love of Dog have someone qualified help you out before you put any weight on those legs.

  4. Good job Will, this has been an interesting series and I look forward to more of this type of stuff. We need Norm to do a build in the Cave now…….Enjoy your desk.

  5. Hey Will – the desk is looking great! I’m actually amazed that you can get anything at all done in Adam’s cave, especially after taking the Google Street view tour today – I know that I would be in a state of 100% distraction for who knows how long! I suppose that nearly 2 years of hanging out there on a weekly basis has gone a long way towards acclimating you to the sheer awesomeness that surrounds you there! 🙂

Anyhow, thanks again for a fantastic build series – I for one am glad to be a Premium member, especially since it helps you and Norm and Joey (and the new crew members) bring us this great content. I’m looking forward to the new series – can’t wait to see what it is about!

  6. I kind of chuckled at that comment too, but the more I think about it the more I believe welding is easy to learn hard to master.

  7. Take a look at adding a gusset plate to your corners to strengthen them and possibly solve your wobbling problem.

  8. The desk looks quite good for a first, learning project! Well done!

Please take the time to paint it yourself! Rattlecans can give you a pretty good finish, if you are a little patient, and you get the satisfaction of telling people that you did every single part yourself!

  9. This looks really awesome and fun, I have enjoyed the combination of woodworking and metal working in this series. Keep up with similar projects I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

  10. I am by no means a master welder, but to make life easier, you could have laid one leg out completely, and then laid the other leg on top, and then just done a few tack welds to hold everything in place where you wanted before you went through and welded everything completely. Then both legs would have been identical.

You’re finished now and it does look good though.

Thanks for doing this video series. 🙂

  11. Loved when you slapped the top on for the first time, “Fuck yes.” Isn’t that just the best thing ever?

Way to go on this thing! You stuck with the welding and kept practicing and improving. I agree with , welding is easy to learn and hard to master! My welds went from total crap to presentable in a week or so, but it’s taken me three years to rank myself as totally average.

Looking forward to this new series you announced!

  13. Thanks for the series, Will. It takes a lot of balls to learn a new skill under the glaring eyes of a community of facepalmers, but you pulled it off.

  14. WELL DONE WILL! I was sure something was going to go horribly wrong…not that I don’t have any faith in you!

  15. Will, this was such an enjoyable series to watch. I think this is truly a project to be proud of!

makes a very good suggestion. I’ve worked at a greenhouse manufacturing shop before and when small custom projects need to be welded it’s always easy to make one complete part and use it as the template for the rest. Just line the parts up, clamp, tack. Then you can move the part around for more comfortable (and easier) welding positions too.

    Keep up the great work!

  16. I don’t know about anyone else, but I am ready to watch build something else in Adam’s shop.. 😊

  17. Awesome series! Great fun watching Will stumble and succeed at learning a new skill. Welding looks hard.

One thing: As a Premium Member, I want curse words. No more bleeps!

  18. Adam doing some work for Mythbusters in the shop? Or are the dummies left over and he has other plans for them? It’s not as if that shop doesn’t have enough stuff in it already.

  19. Looks great. You can see the improved results of your practicing. Don’t stop welding once this project is over. Keep at it. You never know when you’ll need it.

  20. Really enjoyed this series. Hope to see more like this where someone explores a new skill. Are there any progress updates on the finishing?

  21. Hi there, I’m new to the site and everything, really enjoyed the building videos, they’re awesome. I just want to know how the Desk ended up, with everything shiny and pretty, lol. Could you perhaps upload a couple of pictures? Not seeing how it acually is kills me!
