Tested Projects: Building a Custom Arcade Cabinet, Part 2
Woodworking begins on our Arcade Cabinet Project! This week, we have to figure out how to cut the curves for the cocktail cabinet’s top board and the control panel’s side pieces. Ex-ILM model maker John Duncan guides us through Adam’s shop tools to complete the task. (This video was brought to you by Premium memberships on Tested. loving this series ! great work.
if this goes well would you think about doing an upright cabinet?
I understand that you guys don’t want to bore people with an hour long video of you sanding stuff but I think showing at least a little of the finishing process would be interesting and useful. It seems simple but there are a few little tricks that beginners wouldn’t know that could be worth talking about e.g. sanding long straight edges, types of sandpaper/files and that sort of thing.
I know this isn’t a how to video exactly but I just noticed both here and on Will’s desk you seem to skip past the “boring” finishing steps but some of the concepts in there are interesting.
Loving this though. Been waiting FOREVER for this cabinet build as I’m thinking about doing one myself.
I’m having flashbacks to 7th grade woodshop with that band saw and the jigsaw, though we used double-stick tape instead of screws.
I am going to really enjoy this video series.. 😆
I like that the team is exploring a wide range of technologies – not just electronics. Clearly, Norm’s not too comfortable with the woodwork, which actually makes it more interesting to watch. The great thing with plywood is that it’s not expensive – mistakes are not the end of the world – so it’s a technology that’s great for home handi-people to tinker with. You can try new techniques on scraps and offcuts, too. I found it very rewarding for problem-solving at full scale for projects like this.
Saws really make me nervous. I’m sure many of us have met people who got the raw end of a saw. I knew someone who literally had five fingers left – including his thumbs!
Nice work Norm. Good to see you on the tools and learning things. You have many advantages with such skilled people to learn from. Chumps like me had to spend hundreds on wood and stuffing it up until I got it right. Great video though, I’ll be watching this with interest. I question the CRT though. If you are stuffing a PC into what is basically a coffee table, wouldn’t you consider making this a android touchscreen type device too?
The functionality would be great. Even as a browser but the apps to control your TV or media system, or console. Pretty sweet. I’ll start making one and let you know how I go 🙂
Love the work guys. By the way my Dad lost a fair bit of usefulness from his hand from a circular saw. Good to see you dudes are very safety conscious.
The cross cut mins in against the rip fence is a huge safety issue, it can lead to some serious kickback. Use your crosscut fence and put a stopblock on the fence to be safe!
Really digging the wood working aspect of this build. Good stuff.
As another posters said, we like the “boring” stuff too! a bit longer videos is allso much appreciated
It is amazing when you are in Adam’s shop with all the tools. all the possibilities! 😉
can’t wait to follow this! currently backlogging all the Premium Stuff i have missed, but i want to drag out on the fun 😉
Wes looks a bit bored there in the background.
Norm’s little known talent
loving this series. Can’t wait to see the next episode.
me too. Since i am clumsy and dont cut wood very often, i am perfectly happy with japanese hand saws, hand planes, etc, which AFAIK do not send 30,000+ people to the ER every year like table saws do. But it would take me a few hours to make the cuts they did here in a few minutes.
You…..WHAT?? Tape? Really?
Yeah. 3M double stick tape. Realize that this was also twenty years ago, too.
That just makes it more peculiar.
*shrug* That’s what we used. Nobody lost any fingers and the work turned out.
Is there an easy way to find part 1? I tried many permutations in the search box without luck.
