Building a Custom Arcade Cabinet, Part 7
It’s about time! Sorry for the lack of updates on the arcade cabinet project, but after a big delay with technical hurdles and busy schedules, Norm and Wes are back with some progress to report. Wiring and testing of the numerous control buttons continues, plus we turn our attention to the CRT monitor and setting it up to run properly on Windows.

Aw yes. It’s been a while since I’ve seen the custom arcade cabinet. Love this build.
oh that monitor hum….brings me back!
Hopefully we won’t have to wait several months to see this cabinet up and running.. 😝
Is it possible to use MAME-on-Linux instead of Windows? Would that have simplified your driver issues?
judging from the contortions and frequent crashes a lecturer of mine at uni goes through on his linux laptop, due to apparently ubiquitous video card driver issues on linux, i wouldn’t bet money on it. 😉 that said, i think the guy developing the retrofe frontend runs linux on his cabs.
but with niche program dependent stuff like emulation and custom hardware configuration (like the IPAC the controls are hooked up to), windows might just be the safest bet, availability wise.
yay more arcade cab!
i’ll be scouring the dtabase link you posted. i’m currently fiddling with the software side for a maybe-future cabinet (inspired by the videos!) and thought of either upgrading my 16:10 1920×1200 mva panel and using that one for the cab, or springing for a cheap 1080p 27″ screen. i’m having a candy cab design in mind, so viewing angles might be less of an issue.
Its been so long since I have had a CRT I forgot they made that annoying high pitch squeal. The MAME cabinet is nice but I would have to deal with input lag on a LCD panel because that noise would drive me insane.
Anyone else hear the high-pitched buzz when he turns the cabinet on at 6:56? My ears!
Yep, all CRT’s do that, though not all people can hear it, I think it falls in the same frequency range as those ring tones that only “young people” can hear.
I’m a bit surprised it comes through so clearly in the video.
Is the next video up some where?
