Taking Jamie Hyneman’s Tintype Portrait!
You may have seen those striking black and white photos of Adam, Will, and Norm in our studio set–those were taken by photographer Michael Shindler with a process called tintype. Michael is one of the few practicing tintype artists, and we visit his studio to finally have Jamie’s tintype photo taken as well!

Really enjoyed hearing about his artistic process and how he views his method in contrast to a more traditional photography. I imagine it is pretty interesting for Norm to compare photo philosophy. Also its great that there is finally going to be a tin type set complete for Tested. Though, Joey, Frank and Gary still need to get one done (maybe).
RIP Photobooth.
Joey did one. But, I think he took it home..
Still kicking myself for not making it to Photobooth when they were still open for business in the Mission. Jamie’s shot came out great.
Oh, worth checking out Michael’s Instagram too here
This just makes me want to try and make my own tin types. the photos look so cool!
I have been looking at those beautiful prints since the day they were on the wall with a significant amount of print envy. So happy to see where they came from and more history behind them, not to mention the beautiful job Michael does. As always, thank you.
I saw the previous tintype video and recognized the resulting images on the walls, but I had not thought about the fact that it must produce a mirror image until I watched this video. So any photos made before film are probably mirror image of real life . . . that’s kind of interesting to know.
*one second mustache twirl* “OK, I’m ready.” I have to fall in with Mr. Savage here: Jamie is hilarious.
Why didn’t Norm mention they had Joey’s picture taken as well?
Part of the team!
Striking photographs though, beautiful.
I have to say I think Jamie’s Portrait is the pick of the four, to me there is so much expressiveness in his face.
Has anyone else’s obsessive compulsiveness FINALLY been satiated with this? It’s aways driven me insane watching videos and only seeing the 3.
I loved developing old film but thats going away and becoming expensive. Maybe Ill just look into do tintypes.
Good friends of mine are tintype photographers, of a somewhat more arty bent that Mr. Schindler, and do traditional long exposure portraits.
An interesting tidbit not mentioned here is that part of the reason the plates are so slow is that they aren’t panchromatic; they are primarily sensitive to UV and blue light. So the light source for the image must contain a significant amount of UV in order to actually expose the plate. This can lead to some interesting effects, as in the linked image, where the curtains are in fact a deep blue. A great example of this is not available online, but involves a cobalt-blue glass bottle, which appears to be completely transparent on the plate!
Also a great picture of Jamie.
man.. there’s just something so stunning about the resolution of an analog image. purely dependent on the focus. love it…
Always good to see more of Jamie!
Did my own tintype session with Mr. Shindler after seeing this post, a mere two weeks after almost shuffling off this mortal coil. introducing “Near Death Mack”
