Adam Savage Incognito at Comic-Con 2015 (with Astronaut Chris Hadfield!)

Every year, Adam Savage walks the floor of Comic-Con incognito, hidden in plain sight. This year, he’s mixing things up with a joint-incognito walk with special guest Astronaut Chris Hadfield! Appropriately, Adam and Commander Hadfield cosplay as 2001: A Space Odyssey astronauts, complete with working active water-cooling systems in their spacesuits. And on the show floor, they unexpectedly run into a mutual friend…

  1. One thing about the 2001 helmets that I’d never noticed before: they look quite imposing, especially when shot from below (I guess the reflective coating adds another layer of mystery).

This is also the first time I’d already seen photos of Adam’s costume before the Tested reveal video dropped. I’ve seen that photo with Andy Weir all over the place but didn’t guess it was Adam.

  2. Too.

    Frigg’n.

    AWESOME!!!

Adam, will you please share the full spec on the cooling system??? Maybe detail it as a One Day Build? My fellow stilt walkers and I could REALLY use such a system when we do summer parades and festivals.

    Cheers!!

  3. That was great! You guys are going to talk about the suits in detail…right?

By the way, I was going to suggest that Adam should put cooling in his balaclava as well, because it always gets hot and sweaty (Adam himself talked about this more than once), but then there was the post-credits scene.

  4. Chris dropped a HUGE spoiler that may change world history…

When taking about walking around Comic-Con in a space suit he mentions “running into MORE aliens…”

yeah! yeah! Adjusts foil hat i knew NASA worked with aliens!

  5. ^_^

I could honestly listen to Chris Hadfield talk all day!

Fantastic video, duders, great job…serious contender for best ever Tested video!

  6. No way. That is awesome. Last year I really liked your Alien astronaut suit but the 2001 A Space Odyssey space suit blew me away. Great work Adam. This is one cosplay costume you created I would love to try to create for myself.

  8. Despite his incredible preparation, I love how many things Adam learned from Cmdr Hadfield just anecdotally during this video. So very cool.

  9. One of the coolest things i have been present for!

and i helped a little bit, I molded and cast the lunch boxes!

  10. A talking room with Chris Hadfield would be amazing. Hearing him talk about the differences between Russian and US space technology is ridiculously interesting.

  11. That was a super wonderful and totally awesome pair of costumes from one of my favourite movies! Thank you!

And for getting fellow Canadian Chris Hadfield to help you “do your thing” at ComicCon, kudoes!

So, are you going to make the mods Chris suggested?

  12. You can do so at any Canadian Embassy or Consulate. Please wait until after October, though, so we can get rid of the GWB Wannabe called Harper who is our current Prime Minister (similar to your President) during the election then.

  13. That is such a happy awesome smile, did you get to have a conversation with Chris Hadfield?

Everyone: Awesome work and great video, I’m still smiling from it.

  14. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it here now. Chris Hadfield for King of Canada.

I feel like he could fit the duties in during a normal working day.. basically all he has do is be smart and helpful and generally represent the country well. He already does that.. so he may as well get the shiny hat and robes out of the deal. Also he can be on money!

  15. Brilliant engineering by Adam, wonder whether they stayed dry. Chris Hadfield should have his own show.

  16. this is wonderful! my fave observations:

‘this ought to be a lot easier in zero g.’ – ‘no.’

and how chris hadfield almost reflexively goes into this very functional mode when he plugs and checks adam’s cooling unit. the way he said ‘check, about 5 seconds, small of the back’ sounded like that kind of thing came directly from a place of experience, without even thinking about it.

the anecdotes also are a+ game. i mean, can you get any better ones for donning fake space suits?

  17. Such a great video, made me smile through the whole thing! I’m already a premium member, but i would still pay more just to watch a series of Adam and Cmdr Hadfield just talking. I would watch that for hours and hours on end!

  18. Hey I was also wondering could Adam do a run down of the suits themselves? How they were made..materials used…etc….possibly plans or patterns of them….Thanks…one last time great video…great work..keep it up…

  19. one of the best things was the chat Adam and Chris had on the drive back to the hotel. How Chris was pointing out the differences between the fake suit experience and the real suit experience.

    Keep it up.

  20. Hopefully lots of build videos come from this! – I’m anxious to know more about the shirts; where to get them, etc… and how the lunch boxes were made!

  21. Wish I had seen it, but its a beautiful costume. Seems like it went a lot better than last year and with a cool guest! I hope everyone freaked out and loved it

  22. A talking room with Chris Hadfield would be amazing. Hearing him talk about the differences between Russian and US space technology is ridiculously interesting.

    That would be awesome!

  23. He did unveil the $5 Canadian bill from the ISS while he was Commander. A bill that is space themed with the Canadarm and Dexter robotic arms. Also there is a Canadian Astronaut on it which, although not specific, I always thought it was Commander Hadfield.

  24. This was glorious to watch. It was great to see Chris work on his own suit doing the final little tidbits with Adam.

  25. I have a question for anyone at tested.

How did Adam glue the what I assume is acrylic panels to make them watertight?

Are they just glue or is it a combination of glue and silicone? The edges look nice and clean plus the whole unit is very durable.

well done on the casts!, I was wondering if they were store bought or not. Fantastic job.

  26. you can get glue specifically for bonding acrylic. and yes, there was some silicone caulking on some spots.

Adam scratch built the lunch boxes out of styrene, i just did the molds and castings.

  27. Thanks for the reply.

I’ve been experimenting with acri-bond 110 and thinning it down with acetone to try and get a clean water-tight weld on acrylic. Following the solution above may be my best bet and looks to be still clean.

  28. Hi guys thanks for some great footage from comic con . Hey Adam you like spacesuits have you done a space 1999 spacesuit yet. And since you also like the model together have you looked at sci-fi & Fantasy Modeller . I have some great references for models kits but if you don’t have any let me know knowledgeable mine. If some of this is not spelled right I’m sorry if I have dyslexia I am using a machine to type this all out.

  29. For your full bodysuits you should think about adding hidden airvents so as to allow air to pass freely out of the suits, this will help with moisture buildup and reduce the heat somewhat, while on the subject you might also want to try to incorporate air-intake vents (they might be powered by a little CPU fan that blows the air past some ice or perhaps even dry-ice, which might add a theatrical effect as well, and then the air will pass at it’s “leisure” out of the vents I mentioned before I started this rambling).

  30. Really impressive to have Astronaut Hadfield take part in Comic Con in a simulated space suit out of Space Odyssey. He’s actually been out there with the real equipment and having gone through the training in the US and Russia. It was so captivating to hear about his experiences living and working in space.

  31. It looks like Tom Hanks has the second Clavius Helm I made for the two 2001 suits we worked on.Did you sell the entire suit or just the helmet? which would be weird since you would have a suit without a helmet now.enclosed is a shot from the SNL ep. which Mr.Hanks hosted a few days ago.Its clearly one of the pieces I sold you since it still has the chrome insert you used for the visor and my first generation aluminum collar .

very exciting news for me that Mr. Hanks has a piece of my work now,Ive been trying to get a hold of him since i learned he was such a fan of Kubricks 2001 !
