Adam Savage’s Custom Tool Storage Stands
As discussed on a previous episode of Still Untitled, Adam’s stand on storage drawers is that they’re where tools go to get lost. To keep his essential workshop tools easily accessible, he built these custom stands as a solution for organizing all of his hand tools. Adam explains the design of these stands and shows off some of the more esoteric tools they keep within reach.

I like this. It keeps all the tools off the bench, yet makes them easily available.
You think Adam is going to put some diagonal brace on that thing? That is a lot of weight in tools making it sway a bit.
Content aside (as great as it is), this was filmed incredibly well. I love the colour vibrancy, it gives a new fantastic view in to Adam’s shop. Great job !
i’ve been thinking about something like this ever since adam first mentioned it. i don’t think i’m at the point of needing it, mainly because i’d not store most of my regularly used tools in a way that is not lying flat in a compartment: chisels, rasps, and files make up the bulk of them, and they need to be kept stable and not banging into anything. so compartments in flat drawers it is. the moving target problem i worked around by making them more spacious than i needed for the current toolset, and compartments made of thin, slotted plywood: easily replaced and adapted.
the swaying looked a bit much to my eyes as well. i guess i’d rather solve it by making the upright sides into T-profiles with another piece of wood, but yeah… the wobble would have me wait for the moment when the material at the joints gives out.
It feels a lot like the metal rack he made for his modular toolcases mentioned at the start of the video. Maybe Adam could hook up with Grant and make it follow him around the shop!

While it looks interesting at first glance, how does this solve dust/dirt issues? Adam already seems to have a more “freehand” style when working, so I imagine unless there is a good airflow + dust extraction going on, it is quite likely that this rack is going to act as a dust collector in itself.
I’m very curious about the solar system sketch on the wall. For what is used? It really is not to scale?. I love this kind of videos.
It’s a Tom Sachs print. I believe it’s printed on Tyvek and kinda crinkled up. Adam’s was a gift from Tom. There is a matching one in the Tested office as well!

Spotted the airline galley cart that was on screen for a half second. I have a dozen of those in my garage. Very useful.
Quick note, with drawers, by taking foam and cutting out the shapes of whatever tools will be going into that drawer and placing the foam into the drawer, allows it to be both organized, and prevents the clutter that most drawers pick up. It’s supply corner of the hanger I worked in while in the Army did it. Our tool boxes were also similar, a shell with a foam center and cut-outs for the wrenches, ratchets, and sockets.
I’d just give some rags to Thing1 and Thing2 and make them play house elf every once in a while, but compressed air is also an option of course. 😉

Not really all that related, but I just want to mention one of my favorite ‘tools.’
I really love my Prismacolor black marker. It’s a marker intended for artists, but I use it for literally anything and everything. It has a broad tip, which I find useful for blacking out bar codes or whatever, and a fine tip that is good for marking measurements or labeling things. I have had it for YEARS and it still somehow has ink, and the tips are still in pretty much perfect condition. They are kind of expensive ($6 for a single marker) but it’s totally worth it. They also come in tons of other colors.
The shop assistants have to earn that Kennedy-stack somehow 😉

I just wish I had an income where I can afford to buy all the tools I want/need. But I do agree with the idea that putting things in draws tends to make them disappear. Calibre offers tool sets (like a set of screwdrivers, etc), that come with a foam insert where the individual tools fit into their own slot. In turn, they foam tool holders fit in their tool cabinet.
That looks like an interesting project. And I love his drawing style, reminds me of early 20th century illustrations. But what an undertaking!! Would be nice if he included photos of his grandfathers workshop.

Cool. Thanks for digging up the photo Gearman. I’d love to be able to buy an old workshop or shed, just to be able to go through it and ‘mine’ it for some of the cool old tools and bits & pieces someone had collected over decades. Yes, you can buy a perfectly good spanner (for example), but an older tool will have more character (and possibly be sturdier too).
I was at IKEA today and saw these shelves called hjalmaren in the bathroom section. They could be a good starting point to make similar stands.

I’ll agree with a few of the other commenters here. Really needs some kind of diagonal bracing. Even just a couple pieces of piano wire X’d across the back would really help out. It would stay out of the way so you can still use the space in the back as well. I can just see that rack folding one day while rolling it across the floor and hitting something that will stop the bottom, like a screw or even one of the expansion joints of the concrete floor.
Has there been any release date on Adam’s socket organizer? He mentioned, but I haven’t heard any follow up.

If Adam is looking for compact right angle drills, he might try a pneumatic one. The standard ones with a chuck are pretty compact. There are also special chuckless onesones, that use threaded drill bits. They’re designed for the aircraft industry ( where when today lots of holes are hand drilled) and can have a head height of under an inch.

Dammit Adam. I used to work weddings and our boss would make us go through all the trash bags at the end of the night (or sometimes a few hot summer days later). He would have us pick out all the beer cans and those DAMN CHROME PLASTIC FORKS. You are a monster. 🙂
I was taught tool organization by my Dad, and old school aerospace guy. We use primarily drawers, with cutouts for each tool, and careful labeling. The big advantage there is that you can very quickly see if any tools are still out in the shop somewhere. Once all the slots are filled, the tools are accounted for. Tools that hang on the wall also have an outline drawn there for the same reason. Of course we have a big shop, and more tools than most.
