Tested Builds: Repainting Action Figures, Part 1
This week, we’re joined by effects artist Frank Ippolito as we learn how to get started with airbrushing, and try our hand at repainting some action figures! Frank schools us on basic airbrushing tools and techniques, and gets started repainting a Rancor figure. (Follow along the rest of the week by joining the Tested Premium member community!)

Perfect, I happen to have just bought an airbrush, so this is very welcome indeed.
Is there a reason you have set up so the both of you have the air hose across your work surface, or did it just happen to end up that way?
Thank you guy s for this video! i found it really eye opening as i’m a neophyte to airbrushing. i received mine from the wild internet a few months ago and i was still shy to use it, but following the steps Frank show in the beginning of the vid really helped me out get my hand goin’ with this new tool, thanks again and keep up testing! the way you do it is as far the most interesting way of transmitting useful information out there on this wild internet jungle!
Awesome! Excited to watch and pick up some tips. I got an Paasche Talon double action airbush a few months ago for scale model building (specifically the DeAgostini Millennium Falcon that Tested has been doing in Week of Builds). I’m really enjoying using it but it’s mostly been solid color work on whole or masked parts. I find it very relaxing!
Are we going to see the last part of the Lego Millennium Falcon build?
if you have picked up an airbrush and compressor. but the quick disconnect and the braided long hose.
In defense of single action, it does make sure that the paint flow is consistent, which is nice for large projects.
It doesn’t look like the Revolution they use has it, but the Iwata Eclipse and the Paasche Talon that I use has a threaded knob at the back that you can tigthen or loosen. This restricts how far you can pull back on the trigger and how far you can the needle gets pulled back. You can tune it to exactly how much you want and you can limit how much comes out, much like a single action. Best of both worlds I’ve found.
That’s good to know, I’ll have to look into that one.
it sounds like those whirligig things in Dark Crystal
I painted the legs of my Bossk action figure when I was a kid since the color wasnt right….. Its still sticky, 35 years later!
Great – I loved the videos with Frank teaching you about airbrushing with those silicone sculptures, so I’m looking forward to more of this (hopefully even giving airbrushing a try myself when I can!). One suggestion though (which you may well have already thought of, but yeah) – in videos like this where you’re doing something together that requires concentration, having that third person in the room really does seem to help the flow of it a bit more, and also means that there are two different people to think of the rookie questions we as the audience might not realise we need to know, and that Frank as an expert who does this every day might not necessarily think of.
What pressure regulators would you recommend for small shop compressors to make them appropriate for airbrushing?
