Tested Builds: Stop-Motion Animation, Part 1

Time for a new week of building! We’re joined by special guests Frank Ippolito and Sean Charlesworth to experiment with stop-motion animation. Both Frank and Sean have experience working with stop-motion, and we try our hand at making a short animation with posable sixth-scale figures! 1. You guys are going to be the financial ruin of me. I was already looking up how much Dragonframe and that camera would cost. Great segment!

  2. I was just about to mention using the Power Glove for animating Robot Chicken. That is so awesome he’s your buddy.

  3. This brings me back to the Lego and claymation animations I used to make as a kid. Used a tool called MonkeyJam – looks like its still available. It was pretty basic compared to the likes of Dragonframe, but free and easy to use. Might be a good starting point for a beginner.

  4. One of the things I learned from watching the “How it’s done” videos on the Looney Tunes videos is that the LT cartoons seldom had more than one character on-screen at once! There might be an establishing shot with 2 (seldom more) characters, but then it was medium/close-ups that only had one character to animate. One exception was the Duck-Rabbit-Duck trilogy, where you had Elmer-Daffy-Bugs on-screen and interacting.

Seems that you need to do the same kind of planning for stop-motion as well.
