Ironhead Studio’s Incredible Movie Costumes

This is a rare treat: we get up close with the helmets and armor made by Ironhead Studio for films like Batman v Superman, Captain America: Civil War, and Tron: Legacy. Ironhead Studio founder Jose Fernandez, who has been designing and making film costumes for decades, chats with us about how superhero costume fabrication has evolved over the years.

  1. His work is amazing and the Apocalypse is 1000 times better than the one from the new movie.

  2. Beautiful costumes and helmets. I really love the progression as he moves forward in years. There is definitely a lot skill showcased. Jose’s interview skills might need a little PR coaching though I’d hate to see that work get eclipsed by a bad public impression.

  3. His work is amazing and the Apocalypse is 1000 times better than the one from the new movie.

Totally, Fox dropped the ball on this one. Not that Bryan Singer would have done it any justice anyway.

  4. Easy now. I love to hear artists and business owners “tell it like it is”. Jose is top of his craft, and deserves respect.

  5. Great interview Norm, this has to be one of my fav’s so far from the show. Great work, love the Tron helmets!

  6. reading the comments Frank havent you heard Adam say thats like cutting? But seriously I hear you, Jose’s work is amazing and obviously adds value to every property he’s been involved with. It’s a shame he hasn’t got the public credits he obviously deserves.

  7. No disrespect, because this guy’s work is amazing, but in that interview he came off as an angry guy. I’m not saying he doesn’t have a right to be angry as he has apparently not been treated fairly by the industry, but showcasing that in an interview is bad form.

There’s a fine line between “telling it like it is” and just plain shit-talking others in the same industry.

  8. fwiw, i didn’t hear any shit-talking others. i heard him say things like not liking some designs, or being upset about not getting screen credit for work he did. shit-talking others would imply he pins these things on somebody’s shortcomings. like: ‘XY is such a lousy designer, never once made anything that looked better than a turd with stickers on it. even his wife thinks he has bad breath. and guess who they asked to design Z?’

i took that he knew this is a consequence of working on a huge-scale team effort – sometimes, decisions get made you think could be made better, or more justly.

but the last thing we need is another talking head who thinks this fact alone must make every statement not derive an iota from the party line.

  9. Jose’s work is Hands Down Some of the best in the business ,if not the best. Good on him for promoting Iron Head .

  10. I’ve worked with that guy(Jose) years ago, I’ll say two things about him.

1: Great man but what he lacks is exactly why he doesn’t get credit, he’s been either afraid of growth or afraid of people realizing he isn’t what he proclaims to be. He is great artist that does “DOES” not know how to work with people period. I never worked at his shop but from what I hear from the guys in the industry and at Marvel they say that not much has changed with him, to get respect you must first give respect.

    Matthew 7:12

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

    2. I notice he said that he hadn’t received credit for his work, what about the people that fostered him into the industry where is their credit? Many of them are still alive today where is the respect to the history that paved the way for him? I’m sure he’ll give credit to that crew he’s got working there, he did say that right? During the interview.
