Inside Mike Senna’s BB-8 Replica Droid!
BB-8 replicas continue to impress us! We meet up with droid builder Mike Senna to take a look under the hood of his newest BB-8 robot replica. Mike, who first made a fully animated BB-8 in time for Star Wars: The Force Awakens last year, has now built a static model that is more practical for display and convention appearances. Here’s how it works!

This video was eye opening. I just joined the BB-8 Builders club in the past week and have been digesting the size and scope of what it takes to make a droid. After seeing this I think I may go with the static model as my into to astromech building.
I was just thinking about this guy the other day after James Bruton did an update on his BB-8. Love the robot vids, thanks guys
Looks great.
Curious how the moving one will turn out.
I would probably wound a man for touching my droid.
Something I’ve noticed is that BB-8 from the movie turns its head independently of the ring at the base of the head. I haven’t seen any models with that detail, not even the one that was on stage with J.J. Abrams at Star Wars Celebration.
Check out James Bruton’s version 3 build.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at that. I’ve seen his videos before, but I think that was v2.
The initial files we use were made when we didn’t know his head could move like that. The modelers did take the possibility into account and made it rotatable, but based it off of R2, which has the metal ring attached to his dome, the ring rotates with the dome. That is what the base files can do at the moment, but BB-8s ring stays stationary and everything above it rotates, so we’ll have to change that.
There are multiple builders (including me) working on new ring designs to make that rotation possible, preferably without having to change the other parts, so it will be easy to swap out for people who have already (partially) finished a dome.
BB8 with a bb rail gun?
Mike, this is the version that needs a lighter thumbs-up.
Fantastic builds as always.
