Meet Ryan Nagata’s Sci-Fi Ray Gun Collection
While visiting prop maker Ryan Nagata’s shop, Adam Savage learns about Ryan’s collection of custom ray gun replicas. These beautiful hand props are each unique in their design and inspiration, and would right at home in a mid-century sci-fi serial. Check out the one based off of WETA’s Dr. Grordbort Righteous Bison!

Really nice collection. So Adam when are you going to do a 1 day build of a Ray Gun??
I love them all!
*A I have a thing for the bubble one…. I dont know why but something about the shaping and little greeblies gives it a very refined industrial look. Some of it might be the wing on top reminds me of the Rocketeer.
Very impressive. Enjoyed this BTS feature.
Very cool.
In Silicon Valley there’s HSC Electronic Supply (Halted) for your old vacuum tube fix. Lots of other old electronic gear too (although they aren’t exactly just giving the stuff away).
And if you get up early enough, be sure to hit the Electronics Flea Market at De Anza College. You should get a better deal on the fun stuff that shows up there.
I like the filter on the red one. It looks like it would be a heat sink to increase rate of fire. Love that detail.
Very Inspiring. I’m off to the hardware store!
In the boston area, the MIT flea is a good source of all sorts of parts and pieces.

“The MIT Radio Society, in conjunction with the MIT UHF Repeater Association, the MIT Electronics Research Society, and the Harvard Wireless Club, sponsors a Swapfest on the third Sunday of each month, April through October. This is a place to buy, sell, and swap amateur radio, electronic, and computer equipment. Hams and non-hams alike are welcome.”
You could adapt an old dial test indicator with a linkage to the trigger for an interesting effect.
Wow they look great. Would love to see a start to finish video on one of these. Also, HAL 9000 in the background!
I totally called Tested covering these when I saw them in the background of the space suit video.
I bought a righteous bison for cheap from someone who planned on competing in the the contest and just never started. Still deciding what I want to do with it. All of the top pieces in the contest were really nice. Ryan’s was the best
Please make vids like this longer! Go through his shop. Talk about his current projects, favorite tools, most cherished shop efficiencies, etc. You guys are already there. Get more out of that set up.
Well now we all need to make ray guns! I think it would be cool to see the tested community making and uploading their own ray guns!
