6. Death to the media machinery.

   Is it “The Long Tail”? I think the indie media (and the somewhat larger, new “content providers” like Netflix, etc.) are producing content that the “Big Three” didn’t seem to think … was marketable?

   YouTube is awesome. Kick ass to all the people making shit, filming it, and tossing it up on the internet. So nice to no longer be spoon fed the same sit-com formulaic crap.

   Yes, the kids. They absolutely are our future. Anything we can do to inspire them and unleash their creativity is a wonderful thing for the planet.

   “How It’s Made” is great. It reminds me of the couple of field trips my elementary school went on when I was a kid. We went to a steel plant in Kansas City (alas, it is no longer) and saw steel being made. And another year we went to a bakery/factory where Wonder bread was made (yeah!).

   So educational. It opens a young persons eyes. So things don’t just appear “by magic”. And seeing the process of making things starts you wondering about how other things are made.

   When I put on “How It’s Made” for my daughters we would bet on how the thing in question is going to me made. “I think they’re stamped out of flat steel,” I’ll suggest. Then my daughters will offer how they think the thing is going to be made.

   Letting your freak flag fly … in the U.K. they seem to have a long tradition of “the eccentric”. We need that in our culture as well.

   +1 for using the word “capricious”. 🙂

   Science vs. Art. Here’s where I took issue with Feynman (having read his books, “Surely You’re Joking…” , etc.) — he tells a story about an artist friend who seems to get annoyed at Feynman’s “dissection” of all things in nature. “How does knowing how a rose ‘works’ take away from the roses beauty?” Feynman asks the artist (I’m paraphrasing since it has been a dozen or so years since I read the books). Feynman believed that knowing more and more about thing can’t possibly take away from the beauty of it. I have always been addled by that thought. I think he dismisses “naiveté” as a thing that is beautiful (and lost when you know more and more about a thing).

   When you learn a thing, something is lost. (I’m also now reminded of Walt Whitman’s “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”.)

   I realize that I’m contradicting myself above when I also talk about enjoying seeing how things are made.

   I too was inspired to indulge in cosplay thanks to you, Adam (and my daughter’s willingness to be my “subject”). I’m iterating currently on a “2001” costume for my daughter. It annoys her because I am now on the 3rd iteration and have plans for another two as I refine the pattern and continue to learn to sew. She would rather move on to the next costume…. (I have 4 meters of pink wool I picked up in Fabric Town in Tokyo for the costume that I am saving for the final iteration when I hope to have mastered it — the wool was not cheap and I had a hard time finding it. :-))
