Learning about Silicone Prosthetics at Weta Workshop
At Weta Workshop, we stop by the mold and cast department, where artists make the prosthetic makeup applications that transform actors into elves, dwarves, and orcs. We meet Kim Docherty, senior prosthetics artist, who explains how a silicone prosthetic like a dwarf’s nose is made from start to finish at the shop.

The thing that is so obvious after watching more of these Weta videos is how excited all these people come off about their job and their work. They seem to really enjoy talking about it. Cool stuff!
Great info in this video, thanks for covering it! 🙂
the passion comes through for sure, both in these videos and in the finished product
What I’ve noticed about all of the Weta NZ videos is the down to earth nature of everyone combine with their obvious amazing expertise. They seem very eager to share without any arrogance or ego. They seem to listen carefully during dialog and eye maintain direct eye contact when talking instead of looking or posing for the camera.
I’m really interested in this series. Great insight in all of them so far. I would have to compare it to meeting artists and designers at Blizzcon. In both cases for me it was very much about people doing a job they love, almost detached from the cultural impact of their industry and effort. Fantastic stuff!
Norm needs to spend more time with Frank 🙂 To me it seems like Norm was thinking: “Hmm, I heard Frank use that term, but I cannot quite tell what she is talking about” quite a few times.
Could have needed some “For our audience watching, could you explain what XY means?” tricks 😉
