Star Wars Battlefront 2 Messenger Droid Cosplay!

In partnership with EA’s Star Wars Battlefront II, we made a cosplay of the Messenger Droid character for New York Comic Con! Frank and his team took on the challenge of bringing this imposing character to life, simulating its distinct holographic head with beautiful practical effects. The resulting effect was stunning! (This video was sponsored by Electronic Arts.)

  1. What a simple yet cool effect. I guess the only think needed was a small fan to move air around, but either way that looks very cool.

Thank you for bring this to us.

  2. Fantastic work guys! Amazing costume and great to see the whole team getting involved in cosplay. Maybe Jeremy next? Danica?

  3. “I want to see how hot you are under there!” Whoa there Norm, not on the first cosplay!

Great work guys, the mask and helmet combo really kill it!

  4. totally agree about the fan. The lighting in the mask seems slightly off compared to the film. In the film, the Messenger Droid’s eyes were not as dark. When Gunther put on the mask, the lighting matched the film but later, the mask was adjusted and the light bars sat lower down the face and his eyes were darker.

    It is a beautiful costume.

    Well played Gunther.

  5. The face effect looks amazing. Looks as if the “bib” on the neckpiece is a bit on the large side, which makes it stick out a bit much from the body?

  6. Maybe putting some kind of grid behind the visor so it has the hologram stripes and riding on a hover board could work to go that last extra mile if you want. But the costume is already amazing

  7. I thought the lighting was good but the face in the game seemed to fill the tinted helmet while this version has too much of a gap between the top of the head and the helmet.

  8. LED lighting — awesome.

Maybe could have made it a bit glitchy? A simple Arduino app could have cut out the LED’s just for a fraction of a second at random intervals — maybe even kicking on a bank of LED’s that illuminate the face from above just for a fraction of a second.

(Was it glitchy? I’m not sure watching it again — certainly not as pronounced as it could be.)

  9. Yeah, it’s glitchy. I wrote a whole sketch that does a slow pulse with additional flicker relative to the current brightness. We ended up toning it down in favor of overall brightness, and left the center LEDs on full bright constantly. Probably looks a little different on video too.

  10. Hi everyone, how was the helmet of the helmet made, was it in 3D? Can anyone tell me if I have templates of this or some file that I can buy? I live in Brazil, I want to do a cosplay of this
