Adam Savage’s Maker Tour: NIMBY
In his own backyard of Oakland, Adam visits the 60,000 square-foot industrial art space NIMBY (Not In My Backyard), where many of the makers set up their fully portable shops in shipping containers. (This series and tour is made possible by The Fab Foundation and Chevron.)

Most of the facilities you’ve toured have been genuinely inspiring to behold, but something about watching Beavis and Butthead make bongs in a dirty shipping crate just doesn’t have quite the same ring of relevance to it.
Love the cannonball mallet!
I may never want to make a bong, but dirty shipping crate is way more like the sort of shop spaces I use than the billion dollar labs and high end wankery that some of the others show. This sort of on the fly stuff is way more relevant to me, even if it may not be as pretty to look at.
That racks my brain. I’m imagining a shop where each artistry has it’s own sub-shop housed in a shipping container. Pull out a shop and hook up power and air handling, then work away. Done with that work, then pull out another shop and get going.
Even just buying a small shipping container (like a 25 footer) and set up a shop in your back yard by running power to it. So many ideas.
Cool video. Thanks Team
Their successor makerspace should be named SEBY – “Someone Else’s Back Yard”
I love spaces like this! I’m lucky enough to have my maker space in my basement…and happy that working on my projects there won’t be detrimental to my health by having them in a basement. Some day when I branch out to new media, I’ll be thankful for spaces like this. Not having to own all of your own tools is great for those getting started.
