Tested: Behind the Scenes of Cirque du Soleil’s Volta!
We go backstage at Cirque du Soleil’s traveling Volta show to learn how this “big top” production moves across the continent and sets up its massive performance venue. Sean Groves, the show’s automation mechanic, runs us through the technology behind the scenes, and how modern tech works hand in hand with Volta’s artists in this amazing show.

That was GREAT! Although, I was expecting to see Norm fly through the air and be caught by his ankles prior to gently being let down on the stage, all to a loud approval from the audience. 🙂
I’m kinda blown away that they are moving the show to San Jose from San Francisco… two weeks of work to move it less than 1.5hrs drive south. I’m surprised it makes business sense to move it that small a distance, but maybe it is worth it for a longer run at a cheaper location?
I was lucky enough to go backstage too – they indicated that SF is their best market behind Vegas and home in Canada. I think this is the first time they are going to San Jose to try and cover more the market. Most people I know don’t travel from SJ to SF for shows – so I think itll end up well for them.
Not surprised they do well in SF, and I’m sure they’ll do great in the South Bay too. I’d love to see the breakdown of the economics and hear if there were additional reasons for spreading, such as venue/cost availability… but it seems both runs are about 6 weeks so it doesn’t look like it.
I mean, traffic up the peninsula is a pain, not to mention parking in SF, but I’d not hesitate to make the trip for a show like this 🙂
That was great! Very cool look into the entertainment rigging/production world!
this is compleatly off topic to this post but tested can you do a video on stepper motors and explain why they can do this https://youtu.be/0DBnGYMPaf4
