Bits to Atoms: Starlords Arcade Cabinet, Part 6
It’s all come to this. Jeremy and Sean bring the cabinet pieces to Other Ocean for final assembly and to test the software with a very first playthrough. Then, with just days to spare, they fix last minute bugs before unveiling Starlords at California Extreme. But we’re not done yet! Stay tuned for one final episode to wrap up the Starlords project!

Love this series!!!
Great work, guys! Nothing like seeing problem solving skills in use.
Fantastic.
I would also like to say, gentlemen…
The “Shoot for the Moon” aspect of this build is amazing and very inspiring. While I don’t have any skills for a project like this, I have found myself on several occasions over the past few weeks thinking of this and saying “who says I can’t do that?” And then trying something new.
This is why I’m a premium member.
Thank you. Can’t wait to see the final wrap up.
Hard to explain how awesome this is 🙂
Could not be happier for the team. This was amazing.
Thank you all for the journey.
Congratulations on a project well done!
What an incredible series! This has been so enjoyable to watch come together. As both a game dev and maker I’ve been anticipating each update. Well done and hats off to the Tested crew and extended family! Now the question is, how can I play?! Any chances it’ll make it to PAX?
As always, thanks for sharing your passions! It’s truly an inspiration.
Don’t think these tidbits made it into video:
– We used large computer fans in the top and base for cooling
– Installed a strip of ribbon LEDs inside the hub as a work light
– Spent a few hours labeling every cable – makes troubleshooting so much easier
– Used a computer power supply for the subwoofer, lights, fans, work light
– Mini PC for running game
– I wanted to use matte black acrylic for Jeremy’s bargraph LEDS but it was too expensive. Kayte Sabicer gave me the excellent tip to just mist regular black acrylic with clear matte spray – worked great
– Originally I bought a sheet of anti-glare plexi for over the TV – for protection and my thinking was to reduce glare from any location lights. But the treatment on anti-glare plexi did weird things with the TV – making the image look grainy/soft. We ended up just using regular plexi.
This was an amazing journey. Thank you all!
Well done guys, it looks amazing! Props to the software guys also!
Incredible! Such a great video series, and with such a great project! So happy it worked better than you dreamed, who can ask for more than that?
How cool would it be if Starlords showed up in the Omegathon at PAX
Fantastic build series, and awesome collaborations. well done!
I am smiling so much right now! This might be my favorite tested video series ever! Amazing.
Other Ocean was fantastic and it was amazing to see the enthusiasm from EVERYONE on a project that took so much collaboration. This is why I subscribe to tested.
Well done Sean and Jeremy!
There are no words to describe how exciting it was to follow this project. I loved every second! What an awesome team up between Tested and Other Ocean. I wanna play…
SO AWESOME!!!
THAT THING IS GORGEOUS!!!
Great work guys, you nailed it, some day I hope to experience it in person.
Questions:
1. Are there any plans to make this build available for someone that would want to do it on their own?
2. Could you partner with a company to get it in a Dave and Busters or something?
3. Will you make T-Shirts with the artwork?
Also, I imagine the build drawings for this would make a beautiful premium poster 😉
Excellent work, that game looks like a professional product. This was a great serial to see the entire development process for such an involved project that requires many contributors.
Such an amazing series!
One of my favorite things was the (probably) unintentional side effect on the etched acrylic toppers for each console. When the players’ LEDs lit up after being hit, it illuminated the Starlords logo in a very cool way. Now I want to play, even though I think I’d be absolutely terrible at the game 😀
Thanks – glad you like it – we had a great time working on it!
We’re still working out the details on what we’re doing with possible releases, building more, etc. Other Ocean wants to do some game tweaks and Jeremy and I want to do some cabinet/electronic tweaks such as replacing the spinners with something beefier, adding downlights under the table and adding a fog machine.
T-shirts and/or posters would be cool! Any updates will most likely get Tweeted/Instagramed from Tested, me and Jeremy.
Very cool, I’ll be on the look out for any updates! And Congrats on such a great build!
Word of advice on the fog machine idea, if you decide to do it, I would suggest a quick dissipating fluid: https://www.froggysfog.com/fluids/fog-juice-machine-fluids/quick-blast-fog-co2-blast-effect-fog-machine-fluid-best-fluid-for-chauvet-geyser.html
Or

Mainly due to fire/smoke detection in most buildings now are easily tripped by the longer lasting fog fluids/particulate.
That being said, this would be a stellar (ha) addition to the cabinet for sure!
Well played, well played! Awesome project well done!
Wow. This thing turned out even more amazing than I expected. Such a great series, so much learning and problem solving. Just an epic finale.
What’s next? 🙂
Can I play? I got next.
I second the idea of t-shirts, and I would love to play this outside of the cabinet as well (console, steam or mobile, using the touchscreen and multi touch for 2+ users, like some pong emulators do). You got me playing the original Atari game already, now I wish we could see this masterpiece in Florida 🙂
This year the content has been amazing, this series and the Weta short film top it for me. Amazing. Thank you so much!
Oh yeah. Been following his series closely, well-done guys. Bravo! And yes plz T-Shirt!
Make it so.
This is fantastic!! One of my favourite Tested builds ever, without a doubt. Nice use of Michael Giacchino’s Space Mountain score on startup too!
Love the series! It had me glued to the website waiting for the final episode to show up. You guys are an inspiration to us all!
Soooooo good!
I know it has been said but have to repeat…this has been the best video series ever on tested.
I of course hope the build plans comes out eventually, would look good next to my PinSim and mini arcade 😉
Just amazing, love this series so much!
OMFG!!! Jeremy and Sean, you made a freakin’ ARCADE MACHINE!!!
I love this channel and I am happy to be a premium member. I was sooo waiting for this last episode to see all your faces when the cabinet was complete.
Good Job Guys! This was amazing to watch unfold!
Now please mass produce this so I can get this in an Arcade in Vancouver, BC CANADA. : )
Amazing work everyone! I only wish I could play it!!! When will you bring it to Portland Oregon? This is a perfect game for Ground Control.
Keep up the amazing work and I love this segment on tested.
This was an AWESOME series, great work by everyone involved. Tested never disappoints!
Absolutely fantastic project. I really want to play!
YEA!!!!
I would like to know if and how you killed your computer audio static.
This project was so cool. Thank you for an amazing series!
AMAZING. Y’all did it! Fantastic job
Fantastic!
This is awesome! I’d love to build my own version!
This series alone makes the premium membership worth having. It made me so happy. Amazing work you guys it turned out so wellll!
A+ would watch again. Kinda want to build one.
I truly loved this project – from beginning to end. Great design tutorial and a great game! Thanks for sharing!
G’day mates, I’m so proud of you guys! You are freaking awesome!
Remarkable work and happy to see how it comes apart and comes together!
AND Danika looks great!
Oh! I want to play, why can’t I play, it’s unfair Tested! Unfair! 🙂
The trip to CAX – with the lightweight MDF ended up not having to take it apart – not bad to move at all made the trip just fine.
Just spent the last couple hours going through each episode – this was a fantastic series and I hope you guys continue to do series like this one.
Really fun to watch and the end result looked fantastic. I would love to have a game like this in my home for when we have people over =)
