Testing: Prusa i3 Multi-Material 3D Printing
Most FDM 3D printers can print in one color at a time, and just a few can use two filaments at once. But the newest upgrade to the Prusa i3 printer gives us the ability to print with four colors! Super duper video, very nice! I am wondering about PLA and bio-degradability, wasn’t it the case that that still takes quite a long time and only when it’s in ideal conditions? It’s probably better than other plastics, but the waste, even bio-degradable, is still something I really don’t like about 3D printing. It’s almost as if that plastic-waste question is largely ignored in the community. Now I do want to start 3D printing, mainly for structural components, but am looking at good options to recycle.
I got my multi material kit a while ago but haven’t got around to putting it together because I’m a bad person lol. This has prompted me to get my arse in gear, so now I hope to build it over the xmas break. Thanks for that 🙂
I’m hoping to pick up my Bits to Atoms inspired, “auto-generated” miniature pinball model project again. I really want to see that through because I think it’d be pretty impressive. You guys do some of my favourite content on Tested and always spark ideas in my head, so thanks for that too!
As for the beep after the priming strips, my understanding is that it is so that you can check all of your channels are extruding properly before it steams ahead with your print.
You’re exactly right about the beep. I since found this out. Also, there IS a setting for how much material to use on the wipe tower. Find it at Print Settings -> Multiple Extruders -> Wipe Tower -> Per Color Change Depth. It defaults to 15 mm.
They do! As I recall, each stepper has a sensor to detect filament motion.

A cheap food dehydrator is great for drying filaments.
Just one thing I want to say about the MMU: You can put PVA on E4 and use it as raft if you have trouble with unsticking your print from the bed.
