Criterion Collecting – Still Untitled: The Adam Savage Project – 4/21/20

We’re giving one more week before returning to Spoilercast movie discussions, but can announce that the first movie we’ll be watching is the 1976 gangster film Mikey and Nicky. In previewing the film (spoiler-free), we detour into the deep well of movies streaming on the Criterion Channel. We also talk about great films about San Francisco, what we keep on our bookshelves, and the struggle to stay productive at home.

  1. I know only has an acquaintance with him, but doing a Spoilercast of Mikey and Nicky with Patton Oswalt would be amazing!

  2. There are a couple of films I was quite surprised to find on the Criterion channel as I didn’t know they were readily available anywhere, at least in the States: Floating Clouds by Mikio Naruse and The Crimson Kimono by Samuel Fuller. I haven’t yet seen either but have been looking for them a long time. Floating Clouds, as I understand, is considered one of the greatest Japanese movies ever made, while The Crimson Kimono, made in 1959, is notable for having some surprisingly progressive perspectives on the Asian experience in America.

Another movie that I saw is having its exclusive streaming premiere on the channel is Long Day’s Journey into Night by Bi Gan, which is well worth a watch for those that can succumb to its deliberate pace. Yes, it can be considered slow moving in the vein of Tarkovsky (whose work seems to be directly referenced in a few shots) but I found it absolutely mesmerising in creating a mood (not unlike Wong Kar-Wai). The most accurately dreamlike feeling I’ve seen in a film since Eternal Sunshine, *gorgeously* shot and technically jaw dropping.

  3. Not a movie, but Dev’s on Hulu which wrapped up last Wednesday shows a good deal of SF (Dolores Park and Russian Hill) and Santa Cruz mountains. This is Alex Garfields new series. High recommended.

  4. Hi Adam:

A realy good movie is, “Guns at Batasi”; super good.

It’s about the british army in a little colony, that is reaching for independence….

The sargent major and various ncos are left to defend an elderly, femail, member of parlement, during a major uprising of the native troops! They have one british solder, with his rifle, who is transferring through….

The native troops have everything up to artilary….

Great drama, great cast, oh wow…I wont tell you any more…

    Another great movie is…”The Train”….

When they blow up a rail yard, and wreak a train…it’s a real train, and a real railyard….

    Frankenhiemer!!!!

Go to google and “7up tank commercial”

    Thanks

    Brian

I thought you never read these things?

  5. If you’ve got a membership to https://www.kanopy.com/ (movie streaming platform from your library) you’ve got free access to 50 great Criterion Collection movies.

Kanopy is a free service you sign in with your library card number (which is also free in a lot of places). Lots of movies, but yeah man, lots of Criterion Collection movies as well.
